re: Do waiters expect to get tipped post tax?

Your salary, and thus the regular paycheck, is probably based a lot on how experienced you are and how well you do your job. Tipping is your way of paying waitstaff based on how well they do their job.
If they suck at it, they won't get as good of tips and won't end up making as much money as the waiter who is excellent at it.
So why not just fire them and find someone else if they suck at what they do? That's how it works in the rest of the working population.
Do you expect a tip for getting the work you did in the office today? If not, how can your customers ensure they are getting good service?

Did you confuse walk ons with 5 star?
I wouldn't doubt if you did.

That's actually not true. Mothers in NOLA doesn't allow tipping, and the food prices are fine. Much of Europe doesn't practice tipping at restaurants, and I never found it overly expensive to eat out.
If restaurants built in the wait staff wages into the cost of food it really would only add a few dollars to your meal. In many cases, waiters actually do much better when working for tips.

You don't think waitstaff gets fired all the time? Of course they do.

Nah, but, some kickbacks certainly wouldn't hurt.

Ummm, I'm thinking this is a poor example.

I kinda think the whole tipping thing is pretty pointless. Why are waiters expecting tips when the rest of the working world gets a regular paycheck for doing their job?
The business model is such that restaurants can save money on wages and customers can pay what they think the service was worth and waiters have an incentive to work harder. Don't blame the waiters, they make $2.13 per hour in Louisiana. I believe there have been restaurants that tried the "no tipping" thing and it didn't work. Customers like to pay for the service.

Lmao I love reading all the posts from people who can't afford to tip. Don't eat there if you can't tip, simple as that. If $5 - $15 is gonna give you second thoughts, you prob shouldn't be eating out.

Honestly I think it depends on the quality of the restaurant. If I go to Antoine's or Bayona in NOLA or Per Se or Keens here, the staff will be and should be impeccable.
OTOH if I go to Waffle House at three in the morning service could be predictably different.
It should come down to expectation of service whether tips should be included or not.

Wrong again Chad. It doesn't take being a waiter to understand the concept of tipping. Even if you don't have a lot of money, don't use that as your excuse not to tip. Just don't go out to eat you frugal bastards. If the seevice sucks, yeah tip them 5%, but if they take care of you, don't be a bitch.

i got a bunch of $10 bills i can swap for $20's since you got no fricks for your money.

then you go to a fancy place with a $200 tab for a table of two and this waitress is cleaning house with tips and does a bunch of nothing.
I tip, but the concept of the tip being based off of the price of the meal is fricking asinine.
The all-you-can-eat salad and breadsticks at Olive Garden is infinitely more taxing on a waiter than a $50 steak, but I'm supposed to give you more? That's a crock of shite.

if there is any other reason, then you're just a pos.

my question is tipping pre or post tax. etiquette says pre, but i feel like its becoming more accepted as post.
i tip well, i don't like giving away money. I don't have to enjoy tipping.

That's fine. Of course in this case, the fee is determined after the service is rendered which gives all the power to the customer. Most customers would rather that.
You'd rather pay the waiter before the meal?
