I tip, but the concept of the tip being based off of the price of the meal is fricking asinine.

The all-you-can-eat salad and breadsticks at Olive Garden is infinitely more taxing on a waiter than a $50 steak, but I'm supposed to give you more? That's a crock of shite.

This, I agree with.

Keeping waters refilled for a full table is more work than going and getting a $40 bottle of wine off the shelf and pouring a round.

Now, if the waiter is knowledgeable and can talk you through the wine list (or tap list or whatever) and give you informed feedback, that's worth a little more.

That place with the $50 steak is more likely to have a good knowledgeable server and better timing than an Olive Garden.

Seems like I kicked the hornet's nest today.

I tip 20% unless I get absolutely shitty service. But it doesn't mean I have to agree with the practice.

Oh I give plenty of fricks about my money, I'm just smart with it. I mean it's 2016, why this topic is even up is beyond me.

That's fair enough. But businesses don't do that. And the restaurants that have tried this discovered their customers would rather tip.

Do you purchase goods before you consume them? Amazon, Home Depot, just about any retail outlet operates this way.

you aren't their parents... But if you have give a random stranger a life lesson so bad, give them 5% and tell them to their face they suck and could have gotten paid better if they didn't suck.

How will you get better at not being a shitty person by not tipping?

I would rather the cost of someone bringing me my food and keeping my water filled to be included in the overall cost.

If the service is bad, yea don't tip or leave less. Other then that, you're a grown adult in 2016, you should know you have to tip of you go out.

I love the "it's 2016..." argument. What the hell does the year have to do with it?

ETA: I can use that exact same shitty argument the other way. "It's 2016, why haven't restaurants figured out a way to pay their employees a fair wage? I mean shite, it's 2016."

Sure, but you can make the same example at the same restaurant. Ordering shrimp fajitas and a ribeye shouldn't be any more expensive from a tip standpoint than ordering two hamburgers.

So I should tip if I want to be a shitty person?

Your words are all retarded. I can see why you're a career waiter now.

Because if you go out to eat, you more then likely have to tip. It's been like this for decades and it's not like you're tipping $20 bucks or something. It's a few dollars, so if you hate it, don't go out.

When you get paid less than $3/hr you'd understand. If restaurants actually paid waiters a decent hourly wage then your trip to TX Roadhouse would cost twice as much

This.

And It gives them incentive to do a decent job. Would you like McDonalds level service while also paying an extra 50% on your bill? Restaurants would start dropping like flies.

No, I totally agree that basing a tip strictly on percentage is antiquated.

There's no difference from a server's perspective opening a $30 bottle of wine vs. a $200 bottle, but one is going to expect a much larger tip.
