They are easy just always remember that traffic inside the roundabout always has the right of way and never change lanes inside the roundabout. Whichever lane you entered is the lane that you exit it.

Then how do you get in to and out of the inside lane?

If diverging diamonds are designed well, you don't even notice anything's different until you're on the other side. Then you're like, wtf just happened?

true. But getting off of the interstate, and making your first left is weird.

Yeah that one had me scratching my head at first. It used to be fully signalized, didn't it?

Yes and you accessed the bridge from a traffic light by the hot springs. Now the street to Hotel Colorado is not a thru street and the bridge starts where the old dysfunction junction was then passes over the hot springs parking lot. There is a walking bridge where the old bridge was. The old bridge actually collapsed into the Colorado River while it was being taken down.

Where I live, they replaced a traffic light with a roundabout and it has helped alleviate traffic tremendously. Previously, there were huge traffic backups at the light in the morning and evening rush hours.

And when they are designed correctly. For example, don’t put a pedestrian crossing at the roundabout, move the crossing up the street a ways. If it’s a 2 lane roundabout make sure you make the diameter greater than the minimum (or else keep it single lane.

I'm a big fan of roundabouts now that they seem to be popping up everywhere. The ones in Hammond have worked very well. I had not heard of this divergent diamond though....after some research and a few YouTube videos, I'm convinced this is what they should've gone with at the Walker exit. Those look awesome, I'm looking forward to seeing them start coming to Louisiana in the year 2059 But for real, that's a genius idea. I'm really not sure why we haven't seen it implemented more in this area with the recent I-12/I-10 construction.

There was a high number of them in Wisconsin and they worked great when people knew how to use them.

Just saw this (Diverging Diamonds): LINK Pretty slick. Don't try to understand the whole enchilada in one bite. When you break it down from an individual motorist's point of view navigating through it, it's a beautiful thing. Going out on a limb here and saying it's probably too expensive to retrofit an existing interchange with similar dynamics to the one in the video. Also assuming it works only for overpasses over interstates and not vice-versa.

Do Roundabouts work?

I wish it were possible to replace every red light with one. Roundabouts are God’s answer to people like me who like to keep moving in traffic.
