Depending on the plant (refinery) add on another $30k.
Whether or not you guys think a pilot’s job is easy or not, they’re there to protect the public. You think foreign captains know the river good enough to navigate a ship from the mouth to BR?
What would happen if we didn’t have pilots? Are they overpaid, maybe so. But definitely necessary.

I don’t think anyone has argued that they are not necessary. The main complaints are the nepotism and use of political clout... both of which is tied to their pay.

River pilot at 700k
Does this mean the co pilot is the now the official job of the OT making 350

No doubt. The marine pilot game is a government protected racket.

Let’s petition the government to shop around for cheaper pilots.
Bottom line, these guys know what they’re doing and safely bring ships in and out the river with no cost to the taxpayer.
They make $700k/year. Good for them.

that's not how it works. It's a restrictive market. A less restrictive market, wages would fall in line.

Do you have any idea how long it takes to become a river pilot?
You can go to med school and become a doctor quicker than you can become a river pilot.

Texas A&M maritime degree gets you a lot of those hours and licenses before you even graduate. And if your wife family is already in it they can move you over within a year or two of graduating.
Becoming a pilot within a year or two of graduating from a maritime institution is misleading. It happens but an outlier. It is more a timing issue plus the necessary time on the river and earning the related river licenses.

They may not be funded by taxes, but it’s a government protected racket and their cost is certainly passed down to consumers.

NOBRA pilots have the most difficult track n the Country due to the bends in the River.
You're getting down voted but Mississippi river piloting is considered the most difficult in the US, at least. Primarily because the river is constantly changing. channels, shoals and bars are constantly shifting. The bends that you mention are difficult but the changing direction of waterflow that they produce actually create a lot of that siltation variance that makes a pilots job so much more difficult.
And no, I'm not a river pilot and don't know any. I've just read up on this a bit.

A lot of people in this thread are replacing experience with training and education. Let’s compare a river pilot to a plane pilot, lol. Which job is harder? Now which job pays more?
You could say it takes 30 years to become a CEO, that doesn’t mean a CEO is a harder job then being a surgeon.
Also, surgeons have 8 years of education before their training. It doesn’t take a year to learn how to drive a boat. It simply takes experience to get better at it.

guarantee I could learn a river pilot's job a hell of a lot faster than he/she could learn mine, I'm already damn good with a boat, just would need to learn a little about the river

The smart ones pay the one year salary buy in by getting a loan for almost half their pay and pay it off the second year, not a bad deal I mean..... errrr scam

The people white knighting for these scammers is hilarious in this thread. Their job isn’t that hard or stressful compared to most high skill jobs. It’s just a bunch of nepotist assholes protected by the government to keep a nice paycheck.

Somehow I knew this thread would end up with river boat captains being compared to airline pilots and it considered a harder and more stressful job.
Well done OT well done.

I don’t know if I read the whole thread, but it’s pointed out in past threads that the Louisiana river boat captains pay is in line with places like California, Houston, etc. So it’s not a local thing where nepotism really helped the pay.
The pay has more to do with the liability at hand and the uniqueness of the job. One of the reasons nepotism is so affluent is because it takes rare credentials to qualify for the job. So someone has to spend a lot of time and money working to get the qualifications with no guarantee of the high paying job. Given, they are working and being paid the entire time so it’s not for a loss.
I’m simply saying I’ve never heard a kid say, I want to be a boat captain some day. Outside of fishing boats that is.
