Just saw a story about an instagram account in Atlanta that was guiding people how to squat in homes. They would just charge people like $1,000 in exchange for finding a home on the rental market, getting keys made, and getting them inside and advise them on how to squat.

quote:

ATLANTA — Just days after a Channel 2 Action News investigation exposed an Instagram account that was allowing people across metro Atlanta to squat in homes, we’ve learned that a new bill has been introduced at the State Capitol designed to stop squatters from stealing homes.

“The company’s owners will come out, so will the police. The police will tell you there’s nothing they can do about it -- squatters rights,” the account said.

But HB 1017, the Georgia Squatter Reform Act, would make it clear in Georgia law that squatting is criminal trespassing, making it a police matter, not a civil court case.

My thought process always goes to grabbing a few goons and rampaging through the house, throwing the person and all their shite onto the front lawn then changing the locks on the spot. If the police wouldn't get involved to kick them out, they certainly couldn't get involved to force them back in? So that would leave them to go through the court system.

**Note I am not talking about people who stop paying rent or overstay their lease and take forever to evict. As shitty as it is, I recognize that states have granted those people rights that would land you in actual trouble around this.

Courts do. Police probably hate it but they must carry out orders.

Which I still don't understand. They entered an agreement with a the landlord and broke their end of the agreement. They should be able to get kicked out easily.

You want the police to break the law? The laws need to change.

In Mississippi, squatters have no rights. Only law MS has is if a person lives on a property "Undisturbed for 5-7 years".

It’s a scam
Police can’t enforce

If your parents die make sure you occupy that house

In big liberal cities the squatters probably have more rights than the homeowners. Once you get police and courts involved, and there is a record, you are probably screwed. I'd opt for swift, violent removal with a few trusted buddies who can keep a secret.

This is what I always figured. Before any authorities get involved, just get in, get them out, and then what are they going to do? Call the cops and demand they be let back in to a house they never had any right to and aren't currently in?

Prove it buddy.

If it is a civil matter, then what about being a squatter magically entitles the person to police protection, when ownership doesn't?

What am I missing?

When the police confront a squatter, the squatter will show a signed lease. Obviously, it was forged, but the police back off and say it is a civil matter and will not take any action against the squatter.

Yes and no. The courts allow the squatters to stay while the issue is adjudicated. Basically giving the benefit of the doubt to the squatter.

The problem is that in a lot of places it can take 12-18 months to get a court date so the landowner can get the person removed.

The biggest issue is that it takes too long to work through the court system.

"I was in my private, personal domicile and was approached by unwelcomed guests. I feared for my safety" seems like a good way to handle this nonsne

Sure, but if you then throw that squatter out on the front lawn with all his stuff (after the police are gone), are the cops going to then come back and enforce that fake signed lease?

i guess it depends on where you are.

quote:

According to squatters rights Louisiana enforces, squatters must have lived in the property for 30 years or for 10 years with color of title to invoke Louisiana squatters rights and claim right of possession

welp nevermind. We need to get these laws changed.

quote:

Landlords and owners can remove squatters through a standard eviction- but they cannot attempt to remove them forcibly.

So you come home from mardi gras, someone living in your house. you have to evict them.

I know it prob doesnt happen like this, but this is the defense.

quote:

The best way to save yourself headaches regarding squatters' rights and adverse possession laws is to prevent them from gaining access to your property in the first place-
So it could.

Also you can put up no trespassing signs, offer to lease the place to the squatter or sell the property as is.

Lol, this is so fricking dumb. I should be able to shoot them or have them removed by law enforcement.

quote:

Offer to Rent Them the Property
If you don't want to immediately go down the route of eviction, you could offer the squatters the opportunity to rent the property from you as lawful tenants.

quote:

Sell the Property to an As-Is Cash Buyer
Another possible option for those who don't want to deal with an eviction battle is to sell the property as-is to an online cash buyer.

Seriously? go frick yourself.

At what point does trespassing, unlawful entry, breaking and entry, etc. become "legaly squatting"? Can I just go to any house in town, break in and claim squatter's rights, and get a month free until the eviction processes?

This is nuts. Ownership should mean something.

These laws were put in place in the 1800s to allow homesteading on unoccupied lands. It was never intended to allow someone to take over a vacant apartment/house without paying rent.

Squatters rights are one of the left's weapons in their war on landlords/private homeownership.

It only happened to people who let it happen. 99.9 percent will shoot them, threaten to shoot them, or otherwise kick their arse
