Historians get so many nice juicy nuggets from diary entries from people in the past and learned a lot

Future historians will read our text messages and learn of our feelings through emojis.

Diaries are now just different forms of social media.

Daily Diaries with Twitter
Family updates and drama with Facebook

I started keeping a diary....I call it a "journal"....in my freshman year in college....1982.
I didn't keep personal shite, just school related, for the networking in the future.
I started keeping engineering career daily "journals" in 1985, when I started working for the company I eventually ended up working for.
So, I can account for my work/school daily life, since 1982, and have all of them in my office bookshelf.
Just about to retire this years', and start a new one. I have a shite ton of contacts, policies, procedures, sub-contractors, attorneys, ad nauseum, that I can reference in a heartbeat.

I've kept a journal for my daughter to have later in her life. She is 6 now, so I recap some of our adventures together; thoughts I had on particular subjects; her views and comments on topics; people we visited, etc.
I think she will appreciate it very much when written word like that is a lost art. I got a journal when I graduated high school 18 years ago, and have kept several. This one to her will be the only one I ever finish though.
When my great aunt passed away a few years ago, her children found a journal she kept of her first few years of marriage to my great uncle. Talked about their travels together in the 40s when he got done serving as a naval aviator. Her kids were so happy to find that book and re-visit their parents marriage before they were around.

I keep one to write about what’s going on with the family. It will be cool to have years from now.

I keep one for work. I write any phone calls I had or meetings. I track my vehicle mileage if I travel for work. You would be surprised how many times I go back to earlier in in the year and find a phone number I couldn’t find in my email. I’ve kept one for the past 10 years and plan to keep on. It can be priceless if you end up in court for work related issues.
