Everyone that has ever released a podcast with sponsors has made money.

For pretty much anything on the web, if you can get lots of people to click, wathc, listen, etc, then you can make some scratch.

Some scratch being the key point. Very few people make any real money from podcasts.

I actually heard Brendan Schaub say in a podcast the other day he was making more money doing his fighter and the kid podcast than he was fighting in the UFC, when he was doing both at the same time. Like others have said it’s all in advertising too!

If you're interested in true crime in the South La area, a retired cop has one, Real Life Real Crime.
But I'm not simply plugging this one b/c it's interesting and local, it's also a good example of a guy who started off just telling these stories from his experience as a walker cop and LP detective.
His podcast EXPLODED in popularity in two years. He's got listeners all over the world now. And with that comes plenty of ads in the episodes now. He's even got a professional production team now and they went back to the early episodes and added current ads to the content. Smart folks in this podcast production stuff.
So yea. I think they start off with a story/jokes/news to share. If enough people tune in, they can make some $$

I think most of the people making real money were famous before they hopped onto the wave of the future.
The guy w/ the weekly basement podcast talking about how his model train hobby led him to uncover a serial killer - probably not making a lot of money.

They have a ranking system, most new ones encourage you to like/subscribe and leave comments, it moves them up in the pecking order.
The major podcast make bank, Joe Rogan was making 400k a year before he moved but he's the top dog.

Don't do a podcast. Podcasts are watered down. Start off on terrestrial radio & if you want to be a little edgy persay a la Don imus or howard stern do some years playing it straight. In other words before you want to go & drive the clown car, try & first be an acrobat or some other circus act.
