The school psychologist can give one if there is a need for it. Most schools have gifted and talented programs for students who qualify.

School systems employ professionals called “psychometrists” who specialize in giving IQ tests.

Where I’m from, the minimum cutoff for the gifted program was an IQ of 125.

From what I understand, first test is usually free. Parent petitions teacher for evaluation of student. Teacher submits academic and creative evaluation to district psychometrist. Psychometrist then evaluates student with a standard Weschler’s Intelligence Scale for Children.

If the child scores high enough, district writes up the gifted equivalent of an IEP opens up gifted resources for the student including “pull out” resources such as a special gifted class.

If the child barely misses, they may take it over again at the parents’ cost.

I don't remember ever having IQ tests. We had GT at my school though.

I was in the gifted program - I sure as hell had an IQ test. I'd probably fail it today though

Subtle “I was not considered for the gifted program at my High School” brag noted.

Most, if not all school districts have a psychologist employed to give tests. IQ tests are usually only given to students who are tested for special education. There are other measurements used for the gifted programs.

Gifted standards are typically tied to IQ

I was taken out of class in 1st grade and taken to the library for some kind of test, because my teacher had referred me. All I really remember from that is being upset because there was long division and I knew I was doing it wrong.

I passed and in 2nd grade I began to be bussed once a week to a gifted class at another school.

The process usually starts with an evaluation from the student’s home room teacher. They are trained to look for academic, creative, and personality-based (example: leadership) potential.

It’s also important for the parent to officially petition the teacher to conduct such an evaluation. It’s not usually conducted unsolicited, so the parents have to advocate for it.

But most districts or individual schools I know of don’t grant access to resources without some sort of psychometric evaluation through an intelligence and/or personality test.

let me see if I can recall what happened - I was in 4th grade and we took some standardized tests. I scored in the 99th percentile and so they took me to a trailer behind the school and some woman gave me a bunch of tests - it was an IQ test - I still recall some of the tests. Then the school called my parents and told them I was in the gifted program. Then I got to take a couple hours off class every week to go play. It was pretty cool.

that doesnt mean they take an IQ test

kids can get moved into a gifted/talented level course without taking a test

That's how I felt about gifted class too. It was always way more fun shite than regular class. In elementary school, anyway...
