My 24 year-old son just got back from his first hitch on the north slope in Alaska in the oilfield. He was very much not motivated before that when he got home and saw his first paycheck, that was motivation enough for him just bought him to the airport this morning to go back for a second hitch and he was very excited. Money is motivation.

Kick footballs in the NFL.

He’s been the best kicker in the country (in his class) for years, but now the real work starts. Just signed a 4 year scholarship to Florida. Being the best kicker in college is his next goal. Goes to a big college training camp on Jan 3rd…so at least he’ll get to see what he’s up against. Then he’ll go to pre-draft to watch those young men kick. That will be the snapshot he needs to recreate in 4 years.

Streamers and influencers taught them they can be millionaires by sitting in front of a computer

But with the way the economy is I don’t blame them for not being super pumped to get $50k in student debt for a $60k a year job that’s barely going to be enough to survive on much less buy a house

I see you've been around here for awhile. And so maybe you don't care.

But that's more information than you want to share on this site if you want to keep yourself (and your son) anonymous.

Kids today are exposed to way more news and information than any other generation before, by a lot. They can see through the bullshite and are starting to drift away from the corporate machine. I loved college and landed a good job, but without getting into management (which is fairly demanding) or a nice stem career path, there's no way it is worth it for a lower class/middle class student. College has become a huge money grabbing waste of time that is more of a luxury for upper class kids than a path to better life for everyone else. And they can see this. They can see the politicians on social media talking out of both sides of their mouth and saying that boys can be girls. They have lost faith in the system and look to other avenues for goals and happiness. The world as we know it will be very different in the next 40 years. And i'm hoping it leads to less corporations and more small business. This country is intended to be a country made of small businesses.

The country is still building. We are where we are today from the total effort over the hundreds of years. That's how I view it. I was a part of it. Little dude working in the coal mines in the 1800s was too. Everyone. Culmination of growth and progress.

A better question may be is when did we become a economic super power?
