They’re still pretty packed and most schools still have a student section with rowdy teenagers. Your also probably not remembering just how little attendance some of your games had

I'm a high school football official here in Georgia and I haven't noticed a drop-off at all.

Cable tv and the internet killed high school sports
From the 1930’s to the 1970’s they used to get 10,000+ people at Catholic League high school football games in New Orleans.

The death of community didnt help.
Folks used to spend their lives in one neighborhood, people today constantly cash out and move.
There just isnt local ties like there used to be.

I can deal with the high school games; parking is not crazy and the ticket prices are affordable.
For college, parking is insane and unless you have nose-bleed seating, the ticket prices are out of sight and the best seat is in my living room

Well when posters on the MSB are saying it’s creepy to go to high school games if you don’t have a kid playing… clearly it wasn’t so in the old days
The elite talented players you’re watching aren’t at your average community high schools

see clips of LSU commits/recruits (and others) on social media occasionally and the gym or stadium usually looks pretty empty. Our gym and bleachers were rarely, if ever, fully packed, but they were never as empty as I am seeing on social media.

Where I teach, absolutely. I coached high school football for twelve years in the late 90’s-early 00’s. We always had pretty substantial crowds if the weather wasn’t horrible, and a few cases of overflowing crowds for big playoff games.
Same school now rarely has attendance over 20% capacity, and the stands weren’t even half full for the second round playoff game this year. There are multiple factors at play here, and I won’t even speculate on the most significant ones. I do find it pretty ridiculous that high schools were charging $12-15 admission to postseason games this year.

I have a picture of my dad at a Jesuit versus Holy Cross game in 1941 at Tad Gormley. The stadium is overflowing, and there are people standing five deep lining the sidelines. And it is rainy and muddy! There has to be 35,000 people there.
BTW, the same picture hangs in multiple places at Jesuit.

If you have a winning team the stands will be packed.

Ruston High outdrew Louisiana Tech in football this season. Put a good team on the field and folks show up.
