Most of you have said in previous threads that degrees have no inherent value.

But isn't that slightly inaccurate. Most degrees are tied to a certain job. Most likely, you will be judged on your skill set based on your degrees.

I think it's terrible considering all institutions vary with standards. But why do you all agree with it. Do things change after 10 years in a career field that much.

You go to college to become educated, not to get a job.

Africking Men

And this why not everyone should go to college. Most people should decide what they want to do and enter some sort of of training. Our current system is totally messed up and is why we have a mounting debt crisis.

Touche. But certain jobs are much more picky, especially professional ones.

You can be a really good biology student. But if the job is forestry related, the guy with forestry degree will probably get it. Even if you went to better school and have some relevant experience, your education will be your undoing.

It's ridiculous how we got away from it.

Go into a company and ask what they studied. Chances are they studied a science or art.

Do we really want to live in a world where no one studies Shakespeare or Plato just because there are no jobs that require those degrees? I sure don't

As someone with 2 degrees, I completely agree. Including myself, I know several students from both schools who are easily over 35 k in debt and take out more loans because the market says we need to.

Some do.

0 degrees and 100 degrees Celsius are pretty valuable ones.

Nobody really gives a shite about 108 degrees Farenheit, though.

I wish you were smart enough to land a job so you wouldn't be posting stupid shite about your poor choice of degrees and schools.

It is as valuable as it has to be. You could end up with a job doing something you could have done without a college degree. You could get a job doing something that other people do, who doesn't have a degree. If you are an engineer you are qualified to apply for jobs that people with no degree is not able to apply for. I have an uncle who is retired from Dow, has been for about 15 years.

He went to college for a few semesters before getting the job, but he pretty much worked his way into a engineer type job. He didn't have the degree to be called an engineer, but he worked as an engineer. Of course he came up in a different time, but in today's world you just have to take the opportunities that you have. It might not be a job you want, but if you can deal with having that particular job, use it to elevate yourself.

I can see where your coming from. I have read about occurrences like that.

However, it also depends on the industry your in. In an industrial setting you have room to move up. If you are a teacher, you can only teach and the only real moving up is via administration. You would have to leave one setting for another if you want different work.

I made a thread long ago that explains why I am so insecure. You would be to if you were in my situation.

College is a way of testing your ability to learn and retain information. Sometimes you do a little bit of problem solving here and there.

Yeah but you need a degree to teach and that degree is only worth a teacher's salary. With that said, people decide to become teachers. You can get your teaching certificate and probably find a job right away.

There are people with degrees who have customer service jobs. I don't know much about the customer service industry but I would think that having a degree is irrelevant. I doubt someone with a degree who does just enough to get by will get promoted to manager over the hard working person who knows all about the job.

If you are in Louisiana you are limited. Right now, unless you extremely smart, the best thing to do is go get a skill. A plumber, working in the mechanical field (air conditioners and shite), etc. Networking is probably your best bet to get a job that you want, but its not an easy time right now.
