I’ve never heard of a company paying mileage and meals for a 2.5 hour drive, but good luck with that.

Baker Hughes used to do a thing called Baker Hughes experience where they bring 30-40 candidates in from all over the world for a semi competitive interview process over 2 days. They cover all food, travel, lodging, etc. All of that was for probably 5-7 internships/jobs.

I once had an interview with Verizon in Houston. They flew me from Baton Rouge into IAH and paid for my flight (to and from).
Because of a mix-up of their end, I ended up having to use my own credit card to secure a rental car to ensure I could get to my interview.
All-in-all, I put the rental car, gas and one meal on my credit card. I submitted expenses for reimbursement for these 3 charges.
They never paid me. I'd call. I'd write. They said they would. They never did. One of the most unpleasant and unprofessional interview experience I have ever had. And not because of non-payment. The interviewer was on her phone the entire time, as in, she would not establish eye contact. And she had to excuse herself for about 15 minutes as well. I sat there, in a room, for an interview, by myself.
Great times.

Did a video interview for a job in Houston, while living in NOLA. They then flew me out and reimbursed me for everything for an in-person. Got the job fwiw.

Yes, most companies cover the expenses for an interview where travel is involved.

Had an interview at one of the Majors in Houston a few weeks ago and they flew me first class round trip, had a driver waiting for me at the terminal to bring me to/from wherever, put me up in a suite, took me to a nice dinner the night before, picked me up the next day and brought me to site for interviews, then back to the hotel. Covered any expenditures I had including my mileage driving to/from the airport from home and my parking-

I have paid for a candidate I was interested in to fly in for an interview, but personally would expect someone driving to the interview to get there on their own unless it requires an overnight stay.

Do you work for a small company?

Yes companies pay to travel, however I would not expect to be reimbursed for a 2.5 hour drive. Usually the company will set up travel arrangements if the distances is great (required a flight) and/or overnight accommodations are needed.

I went on a few office visits in college when interviewing for jobs. They were all CPA firms and paid for mileage and a per diem for meals. The two that required a hotel they made the reservation and paid for it. I just had to show up and check in.

Mine was from BR to Lafayette. It absolutely happens.

If they are trying to lure me away from my current company and aren't willing to pay for my travel, I'm not going to interview. That within itself tells me something about the company and it's culture without even talking to anyone.
Now, if I'm out of a job and in desperate need I'll likely bite the bullet and pay my own way.

I believe mileage is minimum of $0.55 / mile. If it's 2.5 hrs away and let's just say 60 miles an hr (hope you travel faster than that) it comes out to 150 miles. There and back is 300 miles. 300 x 0.55 = $165. That is before meals.
