re: Do any Christians get annoyed by the constant predictions of the rapture?

I get annoyed because the Bible says no man knows the day or the hour of His return.

All these "predictions" (JW's, Harold Camping, "88 Reasons Why The Rapture Will Happen in 1988" -- which was followed by "89 Reasons Why The Rapture Will Happen in 1989") make Christians like me look bad.

It will come when He makes it happen. Whether a Rapture takes place or not, that's been debated for decades.

Did they say why it was during this particular pandemic rather than all the others, often much worse ones? Or times of genocide and other horrid times?

I’m a Christian, and I have not seen anyone doing this.

You are conflating different events. You are referencing Christ saying he doesn't know when he is returning. That is a reference to when he will return physically to earth to rule for 1000 years. The rapture is a different event that will occur 7 years before Christ's return to earth.

This is no rapture.

There will be no mistake when that time is upon us.

It will be mind boggling and hellish, but this is not it.

You can settle down now and not let those people get to you.

What the hell is the rapture?

Yes.

As long as there has been man, there have been tales of the end. It’s woven into all of our myths and legends and religions. Ragnarok. Revelations. All of them have a gloom and doom end times prophecy, whether it be Jörmungandr thrashing, a 7 headed dragon devouring the whore of Babylon, or Vishnu riding in with the apocalypse upon his back.

And the wailing and waiting is nothing new. Be it marauding visigoths sacking Rome, or Atilla’s horde of Huns. Ottomans at the gates of Constantinople or Mongols burning Baghdad.

It’s come in the form of plague, pestilence and famine countless times. It wears many masks, and its harbingers come with it. Street preachers and proselytizers call upon it with maddened glee.



And for sure, humanity has seen dark days. The Black Death.

And yet, here we stand, in defiance of all of it.

Because all the times before, the people predicting the end have been, to a man, WRONG.

I highly recommend Dan Carlin’s Prophets of Doom for a phenomenal listen that touches upon just such a subject, and the humanity of the calamity that hysteria causes.

And I do not say this as someone untouched by this disease. I’ll bury my last grandfather today. Killed by the virus. He went quick, so that’s a blessing. But this end of the world nonsense...well I’ll bet any takers a paycheck that the world will continue on no matter how many fall. Because that’s what we do. We endure. We survive. We adapt and overcome.

So don’t give into the fear, that same rotten fear that’s been lingering since we were just savages around the fire.

The end is not near, it’s merely a time for change, for a new dawn after the dark. Maybe we’ll see that these worthless trappings we cling to don’t mean all that much, and that we’ve put our faith in the wrong places.

Because when Times get hard, we turn to those we can trust, who we are willing to stand with against the bloody tide. And it won’t be in a pulpit or a politician that you find your saving grace. It will be in yourself, and others who have the fortitude to endure when the night is darkest.

Keep the faith, whatever it may be. But learn to have faith in yourself.
