I understand this, but a company like Gillette or AT&T.. Why would they make trying to spread a certain message as their top priority? Their goal is to make money and they are just trying to target different groups.

Maybe what I should have asked is "why do people see these things as a threat?"

They do it because they polled target audiences which this concept apparently appealed to.
