I'm sure they have it. It's just a matter of what they do with it.
I agree but I'm not just voluntarily handing it over.

I’ll put it this way, my aunt in law got a 23 & Me done and she discovered they have a long lost brother who now wants a piece of their deceased father’s estate. So yeah, it can go very badly if you have some relatives with major skeletons in their closet.

Some of these companies sell your information to insurance companies. Not entirely likely but you could potentially find yo yr self having trouble getting life insurance or getting a higher premium

I did my DNA test. Military like you so pretty much know it’s if the Government wanted it they already got it.
One surprise that came out of it was we found out that my grandfather on my mom’s side of the family might not be my grandfather and we have been doing some digging since and discovered he was adopted as a baby.

My father’s father was a serial cheater of my grandmother and really got around, to the point where I’d be surprised if I don’t have half-uncle and aunts out there and cousins I don’t know about.
And if we went much further back than that, I know for a fact that my mother’s side were slave owners and wouldn’t want some slave abuse back in the 1850s to come back to bite me in some way.

If it's 23 and Me they're about to go under and no telling where all that data will end up. Some scummy company is going to buy all that up for pennies on the dollar.
That, and:

You can opt out of the Feds using it.
I’m sure they will honor it.
Also don’t commit murder and who cares. Learn about your ancestry.

I’ve done one but nothing like that popped up for me. Just found out on my Dad’s side that we have some Scottish nobility in our line and relation to Thomas Howard (3rd Duke of Norfolk, uncle to Queen Anne Boleyn and Queen Catherine Howard). So cool to see when watching Tudor-based stuff.
The future MIL did one and found three half siblings. Her Dad left when she was pretty young (she grew up dirt arse poor) and he had a whole arse other family. Considering she’s in her 70s and he’s long passed, they’ve made some good connections and she now sees them regularly. So there’s at least a positive story out of it.

Some secrets should remain secret.
Also, it's pretty much been proven these are nothing more than DNA accumulation vehicles for government agencies.

for me its a no.....i love my life, my dad, my sisters etc....so I dont want that to change and that is the only possible outcome that could happen.
i dont really worry about kids out there or anything like that.
my sister did one if i want to know my genelogy
my dna is already in the system due to military so not worried about that either.

I shouldnt have to say this but dont do it.
Just tell your wife you dont want your DNA in a database that they might already have your DNA.

I swabbed the dog and sent it in as mine. Came back that I was 50% Irish and 50% Setter

I wouldn't do it but that is just me. I don't trust companies enough.

I had my dna tested - no surprises.
Government probably already has my dna, so I don’t care.
