I have done both Ancestry and 23 and Me. Both of them are very good…. Ancestry tells more of the story of what life was like at the time and location your ancestors lived. 23 and Me seems to hit it from a little more scientific view…more detailed.

With both of them you can be completely anonymous using codes anytime you access the data or results and can anonymously set up something like a yahoo or gmail account for downloading any results.

I reccommend for anyone to do it, as it is absolutely fascinating one word of caution though….don’t do it if you can’t handle the truth about where your ancestors are from, as I’ll garantee there will be some surprises back in there!

Also, I did not consent to do any of that shite where they search for relatives.

Thanks, good advice.

My sister has done 23&me. So I pretty much know my results.

Well, I’m not quite as white as I thought I was…that’s why I posted what I did!

DNA ancestry for Christmas gift?

My mom gave me one one year at Christmas. After I opened it and realized what it was, I turned to her and asked her what the frick was she trying to tell me. Everyone was silent at first and then started busting out laughing.

I never took that test, though.

My wife was adopted. We've tried several times to trace her genealogy but we only get so far with the very limited knowledge she has of her ancestry. So I bought her one of these tests from ancestry.com for her birthday (after Christmas). I realize the results might be totally bogus but I think she'll get a real kick out of any possible answers it can provide as to where she came from. And I got news for y'all- Big Brother probably already has your DNA.

I’ve done both. Ancestry is neat if you like building family trees, but 23&Me is more technical. I’ve met several family members via DNA Ancestry and had pleasant experiences. The neat thing is learning your lineage.

If you do decide to do it, just don’t opt in to the search for relatives function. Amazes me how many people do this. You still get the ancestry (and health info you use 23andMe, not sure about the others).

We got one of these, I don’t recall which one, for my parents a few years back. It was no surprise that my parents from down the bayou are 95% French. It was a surprise to get contacted a few years later to find out my great grandfather pretty much had a whole other family.

Ancestry

I have no problems with them, since they have a large "DNA library" to cross-reference against.

My wife and I watch 48 hour mystery and I swear every week involves the DNA database

Plus, I’ve heard way too many stories of baws getting a knock on the door from a teenager

I was far from an Angel in my 20s.

I already have a huge family. I don't need to find out there are more that we didn't know about.

I did Ancestry because I cared more about the family origin side of things. We have my dad's side traced back to Italy from immigration documents but had no idea where my mom's side was from. The results were super accurate based on what we knew, so I have no reason to doubt the parts we didn't. They constantly update it as they get more data points too.
