quote:Auto Zone and Advance Auto do the same thing. But they all absolutely do charge you. And it’s a crazy high price like $250 for a ball joint press. But they all refund you the full amount as long as you return it within 30 days.
If you have an O'Reilly's nearby, you should check and see if they have the specialized tools you need. Now for the surprise: they'll let you borrow them, no charge, just excellent customer relations.

I like to do both myself because I enjoy it and I can do it anytime like at night or on a Sunday morning. I like to look around at other components and check for leaks while I'm under the truck changing the oil or taking the wheels off to replace the pads. With that said, both tasks are easy but neither are really big money savers. It can be a PITA to either recycle your oil or take all the tools out to change your pads so I see why people pay for it. I've had a few hiccups at the quick change places and dealership which is another reason I do my own, I don't want oil spots in my driveway.
Off topic a bit but if you've ever sat in some of these quick change places for a minute they try and upsell everybody on shite they don't need. I was shocked when people just said, "if it's gotta get done, do it" without question.

My cousin and I had the same debate 15 years ago, pretty much exact same situation you’re describing.
We’re both making our own fricking tires now in the back yard, get with the times.

Guess I can say it now before I'm out. I was pay for oil change because it is dirty and can be aggravating. Plus the price is not that much different from a scheduled oil change with a coupon. He was, his time is worth more than the 2+ hours oil change with a discount from a shop. He doesn't mind a 5 minute oil change that costs 4 times more than diy.
Just changing Brake pads diy is actually cheaper than a diy oil change most of the time, but changing pads can can cost 3 or 4 times more in a shop.

Brake pads are easy. As long as you don’t run across some specialized tools you have to work around, it’s an enjoyable Saturday afternoon for a few hours (running to autozone included).
I saw some where the manufacturers now have sensors in the brake reservoir to where when you retract the brake pistons, it will sense the brake fluid being pushed back and throw a code that you need the special diagnostic tool to reset. One way around this could be to remove power to the battery when doing brakes.
But as far as oil changes, those prices vary so much it is crazy. You have some car dealers that will give you free oil changes for as long as you own your car you purchased from them. Others may charge 80-150 dollars. You also have other quick lube places that charge similar prices, but watch for the upsells. Now if you have an exotic or luxury car, be prepared for paying a few hundred at the dealer. Walmart can be decent in a pinch where you pay 40 or 60 dollars depending on oil needed.
By the time you buy your oil and filter, you are out maybe 30 dollars, plus any other one time costs like tools and oil drain pan to collect the used oil which you are supposed to be able to return to the store for disposal at no cost at least in Louisiana.

I do both myself. Neither are very hard now that all cars have disc brakes.

This is the worse part. My friend usually just lets it drip in a container with a top and then pours it in a dumpster somewhere. It came from the Earth, to the Earth it shall return.

I do both brakes and oil changes myself. Not because of the money, because I know it’ll be done correctly and both are easy to do.
I’m also not going to sit around in a waiting room with all the women while some 19 year old drop out tries to up sale me on crap that’s not necessary.

Bringing the old oil back to the shop to recycle is the worst part. I usually bring it to Walmart but it seems like it’s a different process to drop off each time.
I do oil and brakes on my cars. Saves some money and gives me something to work on and an excuse to drink a few beers in the shop.

Oil change, tire rotation, and inspection is under $100 at the place down the road from my house. Takes about the time I need to finish a coffee at the place next door. Not dealing with the mess at those prices. Brakes were quoted to me at $700 give or take depending on who I called. Some quotes included rotor repair, but required rotor repair/change. Other quotes were just to change pads. For about $150 and 2 hours of my time, I did it myself and would do it every single time. I don't even have a good jack or an impact wrench. Just the stuff that came with my truck and some jack stands once it's up. Still was super easy.

In my younger days, did a bunch. I was a machinist, we did every engine, boats, cars and motorcycles. Now, I just pay to have it done.
I helps to know good mechanics.
I was told last oil change, I’m going to need a brake job. I’ve got 126,000 miles on the original ones. But most of my miles are interstate.

I was too busy playing video games during high school while the other guys were building cars and shite.
I'm paying a professional every time to do my brakes.
Plus I make the kinda money where I don't have to do that kinda stuff.
the world needs ditch diggers too

Agree 100%
I laugh when people say they get their oil changes and brake jobs done by professionals so it’s done right.

I always do my own oil change and brake pads. To many scummy mechanics out there and 8 like knowing the exact part being used. As I'm not going to sit there and breath over a mechanic to make sure they using the right part. Plus it's too easy. But I'm mechanically inclined so I know what I'm doing and trust my quality of work. Now more sophisticated with I gracefully now down to the mechanics. But it is hard to find one you can really trust.

Used to love doing all of that myself, but lately I just don't have the time. I'd rather drop my car off at the shop on a Saturday morning and enjoy my day. Call me when it's done.

all depend on the vehicle and how in depth you're getting with the brakes.
are you just changing the rotors or turning them on a lathe?
are they they type that the hub and bearings are built into the rotor?
if you calipers are 4 piston, do you have the right shite to squeeze them back into the rotor?
and honestly, a lot of modern cars are such a pain in the arse to change the oil now I'd rather just pay someone just so I don't have to.
