Had one at 45. Will do another at 55.
Had testicular cancer 20 years ago and went in for a yearly blood test and visit with Dr. told him I had some lower abdominal pain. CT scan was conclusive. Colonoscopy time. Turned out to be diverticulitis.
On another note, when getting my chemo I sat in the chair next to a retired truck driver who was battling colon cancer. He said he was just buying time. Could never get comfortable and had lost 60 lbs since treatment started.
Get a colonoscopy. Worst part is the drink and fasting.

TRUTH!
Insurance wants you to use the stool test instead of the Butt Barn because it is cheaper. I think false positives are about 1 in 4, same for false negatives. This is your life so those odds are too great to go cheap.

Did they find any polyps?
Colon cancer is slow
If they find polyps every 2 to 4 years
If you are clean every 3 or 4 years
If you are over 65, follow your proctologist advise, not your insurance companies advice.

GET A COLONOSCOPY
The earliest a Colonoscopy is recommended is 45
Posted on 2/12/26 at 9:37 am to Cheese Grits
The main issue is the scope is preventive by law and covered without cost share UNLESS you do the dumb box, in which case it no longer is if you end up doing the scope anyway.
Might as well get the correct answer first and not pay for it.

I agree 100%, if you got to do it the scope is the best way. I waited until 47 and shouldn’t have but it’s done and I’m clear.

If you have bullshite insurance, it is very expensive out of pocket. I dealt with this once. It was north of $3000 by the time everyone involved in the procedure got paid.
I am convinced this is why colon cancer rates are as high as they are. Many people don't have great insurance and don't want to pay for it.

correct. I had one at 50, (no cost) and he found a polyp. nothing to it but he wanted me back in 5 yrs. BUT BC/BS would not cover and I asked about the cost. North of $3000. Waited 2 yrs and had one anyway and was prepared to pay but it was covered(somehow). I paid 200 to the facility and that was it. I assume it had to do with how it was coded. Clean bill of health; see ya in 5 yrs.
Preventative = free. Diagnostic = patient pays. I don't get it.

Yep. Basically, go to hospital, take a nap and go home. One of the best naps I’ve ever had.

It’s already gay enough to go to the doctor but going to the butt doctor is even gayer

a Colonoscopy is the standard and best option."
This is key with me. You want the best when it comes to colon cancer screening-get the best-you deserve it!

The problem is he wasn’t of age to get a routine colonoscopy without having symptoms. The recommended age just changed to 45. It was probably 50 before he was diagnosed. In my opinion, everyone should get one at 40. Even 45 is too old for your first screening scope. If you have a family history of colon cancer, 35 should be your first time without symptoms.

Got scoped at 50 (no polyps) and will again at 60. He told me to come back in 10 years since no polyps.
I personally wouldn’t wait 10 years. My mom had a clean colonoscopy and had stage 4 cancer after 7 years. 10 years is entirely too long after having a clean scope. I work in the medical field and I see it all the time. A small polyp can become cancerous in less than 10 years, not to mention, if they are hidden behind a fold, polyps can be easily missed on routine colonoscopies.

Last year I decided to change my diet and cut all carbs, something I had done several times in the past. After 2 weeks of eating mostly meat I was starting to get constipated which I expected. I went over a week without taking a shite and knew something wasn’t right. I took laxatives and nothing worked. I gave up on the diet and went back to eating more fiber and vegetables, still didn’t get better. I was starting to get to the point where I couldn’t even pee. Went to my doctor, his advice was stool softeners and fiber. Finally had to leave work one day the pain was so bad and went to the ER. They did blood work and a CT scan, everything came back normal. I was convinced it had to be something else so I scheduled a colonoscopy. The gastroenterologist said it wasn't necessary because I was only 42 but agreed to do it anyway. Sure enough, she finds a tumor and I had stage 3 colorectal cancer. I had zero medical history before this, hadn’t been to a doctor in years. I didn’t even get covid. Finally after genetic testing it was discovered that I have Lynch Syndrome which makes me susceptible to certain cancers, colon cancer being the main one. Now that it’s known, my kids will have to start doing screenings when they turn 30. I still wonder to this day if I had never changed my diet and altered my bowels, how much longer would it have taken me to discover the cancer? I was the type of person that hated hospitals and wouldn’t go to a doctor until it was absolutely necessary. I now encourage every guy I know approaching 40 to get checked but I can totally understand why people can put it off for so long because I was that guy.

This is one of the reasons why it's now recommended to get your first screening (cologuard or colonoscopy, depending on your risk factors) at age 45 instead of waiting until age 50
I waited until I was 58.
Right before I went in for the procedure, the doc asked me, "Why are you here?" He acted like it was unnecessary.
I said, "Because I was told I'm 8 years overdue."
So then he said, "OK, let's get on with it then."
Everything was just fine. Afterwards, he said not to come back for at least 10 more years.

he was diagnosed at Stage 4 which meant he had it for some time, because usually it is slow moving.
Yeah, used to be the first trip to the Butt Barn was a rite of passage. It is hitting kids today much younger, so if he had got in at 40, high probability he is still alive.
Back in the day they knocked you out but never worked on me. Hit me 2 or 3 times once and Doc did not believe I was awake till I started repeating his conversation at the time.
Now they give you some form of the Date Rape drug. You are up and ready to go but have no memory of the 3 to 6 hours post test. If you get that drug make sure you have a driver and it is somebody you trust as you will tell them all kinds of sensitive info and have no memory you told them.
