For those of you with DirecTV, do you have the protection plan? I got DirecTV when I moved into a new house in September, and got the protection plan free for a couple of months. Now it's $7.99 a month. Should I cancel it or keep it? What's the benefits of it?

I had it for free and then asked about it when they started charging. Basically, it covers the cost of mailing you the replacement equipment.

They will tell you it allows for free replacement of broken equipment but when pressed they will admit the equipment is leased and they have to replace it if it breaks. They when really pressed, they will admit the Plan only covers shipping of the items for which they normally charge. I cancelled the Plan and when my DVR broke I told them to pay the shipping or I was cancelling DVR service and they would lose the service fee. They mailed it on their dime.

It's a damn scam all the way.

I have it, and I will still probably keep it for that price. I get free remotes a few times a year, and a free upgrade every two years. Our house had a near miss with lightning a few years back, and it blew out the multi-switch. Called Direct, came the same day, no charge. My U-verse buddies were out for a week.

It's insurance. It's better than buying the extended warranty on your TV. Also they will come out same or next day if you call them at no charge

Recently told them, no thank you.

keep it. It comes with technology upgrades and any repairs if something breaks or sat dish gets blown away. I have it for last 3 years. Peace of mind.

I put a note on my calendar to cancel it after the free period. All protection plans are rip -offs.

You lease all their receivers anyway so I wouldn't get it. I've had Directv since 2004 mainly because of Sunday Ticket but I think this will be my last year.

I had it at one time.

I did my yearly call and threaten to cancel for a lower bill thing a while back, and the customer service rep said that I can drop it and always call and add it back if I break something. So yes, it's a joke.

I had a DVR die awhile back and had no hassles getting a replacement without it.

cancel it. If you ever need it you can add it and then cancel it a few months after adding it. I had to do this once.

They paid for repairing my TV, would have replaced it if not repairable. They said it covers all electronics, even computers.

Not under the $7.99 protection plan. You can get Protection Plan Premier for $19.99 that covers tv and other electronics.

One of my tvs started acting up with distortion on one side. Repair guy took it for repair. When he brought it back, he said that if it acted up again, to take a pic of it that shows the date, and I would be replaced. Few months went by and it started again. Put in claim, and they wanted to send me a different brand. I asked for a mgr and asked for a replacement, not a substitution. Got a larger Samsung.

I have the full protection product replacement plan.

Summer 2015 a lightning strike took out 5 big screens.

DirecTv sent a technician out to assess the damage. Replaced the main board in two TV's and replaced 2 Tv's outright.

The plan is $20 a month and I highly recommend it you're in the South.

It also can cover iPads. I've had 6 different screens replaced over the last 5 years
