What is readily observable is that homes in areas with a certain demographic are worth less, and that same demographic commits much more violent crime relative to their percentage of the population.
It's not my responsibility to look at a single person and predict whether that person will commit crimes. What is my responsibility is making safe and wise choices in where I live and what type of people I interact with, even if that does make me "racist".

It’s always the same. White racists justify their racism by pointing out that there are black racists too. So in the worm eaten mind of the racist, all racism is good because there are other racists out there.
No one is suggesting that white racists are the Only racists in the world. The point is that racism is a useless and socially harmful thing.

so is wanting to be around people like you that you are comfortable with racism or bias? or can it be both?

His point was it's smart to avoid people who openly hate you. If a white person avoids black people because there's a decent chance your race will be a problem for them, it's backwards to place the racism moniker on the white person in the scenario.
His statement was intentionally extreme, but the concept is ultimately common sense that most people agree with.
