Are you a smoker? If so, esophageal cancer is a concern. Go see a GI doctor for a barium swallow study.

There are some things he needs to change in his diet also to help the reflux. He needs to cut out these things:
Alcohol
Chocolate
Peppermint
Any caffeinated drink (coffee, tea, coke, sprite etc.)
citrus foods

The procedure itself takes maybe 20 minutes at the most. It's very simple.
The procedure is a bit uncomfortable but whatever medicine it is that they give you causes you to give absolutely no fricks whatsoever. And you forget the events of the day as it progresses.

Dont want to scare you but had a buddy had these symptoms for a few months. Finally got to the doctor and he had cancer in his throat. Stage 4 and didn't make it many months after that. He was only 38. Go to a doctor now

i've been dealing with this issue for about 3 years.. haven't seen a dr.
it mainly happens with I eat steak or any other fibrous foods.
I've learned to slow down, chew very good and drink plenty while eating..
I do need to see a dr though.. Should I call my GP or just go straight to a GI?

Hey dude I didn't read the entire thread but my dad went about 4-5 months with problems swallowing food/liquid. Never told anyone because he hates the doctor. Eventually he ended up not even being able to swallow water and he finally went to the doc.
He was diagnosed with esophageal cancer shortly thereafter and had to have a feeding tube installed. Luckily the radiation worked and eventually shrunk the tumor however it would have been a hell of a lot better for him ( weeks in the hospital and multiple surgeries) if he just went to the doctor until it was too late.

If all the previous actions don't help, get the barium swallow and let them look at that - don't know your age or histroy but you are older.....probably just inflammation from reflux. Also, if there is inflammation discovered during the scope, make sure hey biopsy it - look for some type of eosinophilic esophagitis - a steroid spray can easily knock that out. Get referred to a good allergist and seeing you are allergic to anything.
If it is muscle related...acchalasia.....get to USF's health center ASAP. They may be they best in the world for serious esophageal disorders.
Good luck and hope that a simple scope and stretch with some reflux medicine gets you back to par.

To each his own. A lot of folks like the concept of one doctor that takes care of them unless they really aren't capable of it. Diagnostic EGD rules out the need for intervention a fairly large percentage of the time.

My primary doc has scoped me multiple times. They know what they are doing. No need to be afraid of that. If they have the tool, they know how to use it.

I've got this also. First time was three years ago New Years Eve. I got chocked and I thought it would go down after a couple hours of waiting I almost didn't mak it. They had to call a team in and do surgery at North Oaks in Hammond.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who suffers from this. It's embarrassing when you are eating with a group and you can't eat your meal because you know it will get stuck. Or getting up going to the bathroom every few minutes to hurl it up

As like others, had the same issue a couple of times and have had my esophagus dilated twice. The first time it was discomfort swallowing higher up in the esophagus, the second was chest pain due to some stricture further down. And it was all related to Acid Reflux. Cutting out orange juice was the biggest thing that helped since it was giving me nasty, nasty heartburn. I also take Nexium once a day.
Get it checked out to be on the safe side.

Echo this sentiment, even if not a smoker. Co-worker of mine had esophageal cancer diagnosed because his had difficulty swallowing.
Also, if you haven't done one, the barium swallow test is pretty crappy. So be prepared.
Go see a doctor soon!
