So your username is Tuthill is that in reference to the Tuthill area in Mobile? If so you should be familiar with the booming metropolis that is Prichard, AL? Was it racism that caused that waterboard commissioner to use the cc for personal shopping sprees or was it the fact they were a complete POS and did not care about there customers?

The article said less tax revenue led to not having sufficient funds to maintain the water system’s infrastructure. Does the city not bill its residents for water usage? Shouldn’t the revenue from water bills be used toward infrastructure? What happens when people don’t pay their water bills in Jackson? In my city, they cut off your water if you don’t pay. Also, are people not paying because they are broke, or are people not paying because they refuse to pay for an inferior product (water that must be boiled before it can be consumed), or both?
I know that I am likely oversimplifying a complex issue, but I just don’t see how the rest of the state or nation should be responsible for the failure of Jackson’s water supply.

The last seven head men in Jackson, Mississippi (not in order):

You are not. Expecting your government to be accountable for the use of the money it takes in is just good sense. This is the same as local and state governments sitting on piles of money and letting the roads go to shite. It is cyclical. Every time something needs to be fixed they beg for more fricking money. No! Be accountable for the money we already give you, which is already more than it has ever been, and show us that you are actually using it for it's intended purpose. If you then still need more funds, we can talk, but don't continually cry about needing more and more whilst simultaneously pissing away what we already give you!
It is why I have voted "NO" on every single tax hike on the ballot for more than a decade now. I'm tired of giving then more and more money and seeing little in return.

Mayor of Jackson, party affiliation for the last 50 years:
Russell Davis (1969-1977) - Democrat
Dale Danks (1977-1989) - Democrat, later became Republican in 1995
John Kane Ditto (1989-1997) - Democrat
Harvey Johnson Jr (1997-2005) - Democrat
Frank Melton (2005-2009) - Democrat
Leslie McLemore (Interim, 2009) - Democrat
Harvey Johnson Jr ( 2009-2013) - Democrat
Chokwe Lumumba ( 2013-2014) - Democrat
Charles Tillman (Interim, 2014) - Democrat
Tony Yarber (2014-2017) - Democrat
Chokwe A. Lumumba ( 2017-Present) Democrat
I'm sensing a trend here, maybe 50 years of having Democrats control a city will lead to it being a shithole, as opposed to crying racism and blaming whitey for everything.

so is the author of the Vox article posted in the OP.
quote:
But the roots of this crisis run much deeper, and are inextricably tied to white disinvestment from a majority-Black city. Jackson’s water system — which serves a population that is more than 80 percent Black — has been burdened with problems for many years, largely because white flight drained the city of resources.

it isn't. but certain types.. who've wasted and piddled federal and state tax dollars are on the hot seat, they'll blame anyone and everyone, then expect more free tax dollars.
And this article is an example of why this will never change. Why no investigative reporting on water billing? where those funds go? where has the other state and federal tax dollars pumped into Jackson gone? Not a single leaf turned over. Just straight to racism and/or "republicans".

The City does not bill at any regular interval. When they send out a bill it could be for anywhere from $300 to $9k which people can't pay at one time but never shut the water off. I talked to a friend who didn't receive a bill for almost a year and then got one for only $300. The billing system is completely f'ed and has been for several years but lets blame white flight.
I guess white flight is why the Mayor and Council are fighting over the garbage contract as well. This is an item included in the water bill when/if you get one.

It's funny you asked that. JJ: The Rest of Story: Jackson Finances
In this article it shreds the "white flight" theory. The administration wasn't collecting payments for the water usage. Hell, they tried to claim some state entities were not paying for water, with those entities coming back and explaining, they would be happy to pay if a bill were provided. All of the water issues can be traced back to lack of leadership and only being in office to enrich themselves.

So an almost entirely black city run by black people can't function properly and it's white people's fault?
Posted on 8/31/22 at 12:17 pm to LaBR4
Madison county and rankin co are not on the same water system as jackson.
Posted on 8/31/22 at 12:21 pm to TutHillTiger
A couple of things here. White flight out of the city is not the primary cause of the water problems in Jackson. The primary cause is that they don’t bill people and really haven’t accurately billed people for services for at least 5 years and probably longer. I know multiple people that have never received a bill. They’ve also mismanaged plenty of money that was there (90 million dollar settlement from Siemens I believe). I’m also not seeing this white flight from mobile that you speak of. There is a lack of inventory in the housing market here right now and the prices reflect that. If there were white flight from this city like you say then Sandy Stimpson would not still be the mayor.

It seems like the appropriate response here would be to fire the useless frick(s) responsible for this. The fact that the city seems to be perfectly okay with this particular shitshow, to the point that they haven't been able to fix such a glaring issue over multiple years, tells you pretty much all you need to know.

Some people get bills, some don't.

One would think so

What happens when people don’t pay their water bills in Jackson?
Nothing. The water company will either tell people to pay what they think they owe if you call them or sometimes you cant get anyone on the phone.
quote:
Also, are people not paying because they are broke, or are people not paying because they refuse to pay for an inferior product (water that must be boiled before it can be consumed), or both?
Both. We have been under a boil water notice almost every month since i moved to jxn from ridgeland in december. They have yet to send a water bill and i am paying for bottled water what i could be paying for a water bill. Some people get bills that say $500 a month is what they owe. the billing is screwed up, meters are screwed up, some of the pumps at the plant are broke, not enough experienced employees working at the plant to fix things.

Great explanation of what is realistically happening. Thanks for sharing.

Shocking that people won’t pay their bills with no threat to remove the service they are provided. /s/
