Did your parents/grandparents ever go to auctions?

My grandparents from south Mississippi would go to auctions.

They’d auction everything from tube socks to laffy taffy.

They had an actual fast talking auctioneer

They’d sell frito pies

Chili poured into a bag of Fritos with a spork.

At the animal auctions they would have the old lady selling boiled peanuts

No but my grandmother spent time in the now shut-down mental institute in Millegdeville GA receiving shock therapy and lithium for schizophrenia. Her apple pie and pound cake was 1st class. Just lock your door when you go to bed.

Yeah, we used to go to cattle auctions quite often and went to a few estate auctions at old farms as well. Good times. I was told not to make a move even if my nose was itching.

ETA: Jack Dillard was THE man when it came to auctioneering in the Waskom, Tx and Shreveport area

My grandad used to haunt the old stockyard in West Monroe on Cypress. It was across from J&H. He'd take us up there and buy us a burger for lunch then we'd go sit and watch the auctions. He never bid on anything, I think it was just a social thing for him. He was always introducing us to some ol baw he knew from the old days.

He was an old team roper and showed quarter horses later on in life. Never had any interest in cattle.

My grandparents would buy stuff here and there, but I agree that it was a social event.

I feel like they always went to an auction in Tylertown

My parents used to go to an auction place that was held off of Walker south road. That was a while back though.

Yep! I bet I went to 100+ growing up with my dad. My favorite was a divorce auction. It was hilarious.

my step-grandfather was the Wallace of Wallace Dean Rd, and lived on the corner of 80 ("cypress" hadn't made it out that far yet). his side gig was working the pens at the auction. he carried a 5' hickory stick and used it drive the cattle in the chutes. i think his shins were still bruised when he died.

We went to auctions all the time. Pops always bought and sold and I ended up following behind him and doing the same thing. I've always enjoyed them, even as a kid.

One of the better ones we would go to sold soft serve ice cream. It was on a Summer night that I remember I bid three times trying to chase a drip from my vanilla cone.

As a kid I was kinda meh about them.
I grew up in New Orleans, but half of my family was rural Mississippi.

As I’ve gotten older, they are fond memories.

A lot of the furniture in my house came from the auction in Magnolia, Arkansas. They would alternate the auction between American and English antiques. Great way to spend a Friday night when there is nothing else to do in a small town.

In JHS a good buddy’s mom and gramma went to one in Franklinton sometimes and we’d tag along out of boredom and also to try to tap some of that sweet Franklinton auction poontang.

My aunt and uncle still go to Skeets Auction House in Forest, MS. Visually, what you would expect for rural MS but they do have some decent food. I’ve been a couple times and have enjoyed going. It’s been a while, but need to get back sometime soon.

My grandpa used to work at the stockyard in Jackson and of course that came with cattle auctions. My uncle, mentioned above, is still a cattle rancher and is always going to them, buying and selling.

Antiques at the huge place on Government, in front of CHS, with the Picadilly, Radio Bar across the street. West Moreland shopping center? I still have some cool furniture my mom bought, like a teak wood vanity, that only weighs about one ton. Fast talking, legit auction.
