I had a rich friend who always had the newest Nike's while I had Winner's Choice or Spalding shoes. I got teased the first day of school by him but I asked if his Nike's would help him beat me in a foot race. No teasing after that.

You spoiled youngsters.
Honest to God, if had not been for Earl Long giving every school kid in the state one slick tablet, one rough tablet, and two pencils every month, 75% of the kids in my class would have done without.
When I tell you kids did go to my school barefooted, I am not exaggerating. 90% of the boys wore total crew cuts. Those with hair used Southern Rose Hair Oil or lard from a bucket to slick their hair down.
Times were tough. Color crayons? Who the hell could afford such a luxury?

If you had the 64 pack with the sharpener in kindergarten, you were the shiz.
My parents were thrifty. I remember wearing my brother’s jeans with no knees much more than any school supplies.
