Militarily, we faught the war in a stupid, inefficient manner. The people who actually had some insight as to how to fight the war weren't listened to, shunted aside, or removed.

Politically, we lost the PR war.

JFK wanted to stop the war. LBJ did not. Guess who won?

Communist in name only? Is that like the US being capitalist in name only?

Militarily we did not lose. But the same kinds of traitors who are trying to overthrow Trump today succeeded in losing a war and overthrowing Nixon then.

At that time, yes.

It's happening now so it was just delayed.

No we won, we pulled out cause we were secretly diverting too much military funding to fake the Moon Landings...

Of course we lost.I have never heard otherwise, and any military historian will tell you the same. The US failed to achieve our objective, and we were driven out of S. Vietnam when Saigon fell.
Of course, the way we prosecuted the war was the reason.

Well, we now have little Braydenaline playing travel ball and that wasn't a thing before Vietnam, so, yeah... we lost bigly.

The South didn't fall because we pulled out. The South fell because the Democrats in Congress cut off their military aid. No more weapons or supplies from us. Meanwhile, the Russkies were arming the North to the teeth. Starved of the means to fight, South Vietnam fell.

3 Pages in and no cinephile has chimed in with this classic?

The historical discussion is still enjoyable.

If the US really wanted to win they could have. The war was just so unpopular at home.

Yep. It was never really a war. A war is about skull fricking the enemy at any costs. It is not civilized. We haven't had a real war since WWII.

First, there was never a declaration of war. The last time congress actually declared war was WW2.

Sure, that's semantics, but it helps with context when you look at some of the strategies that were employed.

How they came up with the death counts is beyond me and it was for both sides.

It wasn't all that complicated. Counts of US deaths were pretty accurate since bodies or biggest body parts were collected and sent home. Bad guy counts involved a lot of estimates, guesses and exaggerations. There was a lot of pressure from command to push those numbers up, but even with exaggeration the battlefield estimates agree well with modern estimates made by Vietnamese government.

Today when the media mention US casualties somewhere some people are shocked to hear of deaths in single digits. In 1968 US lost more than 200 in a single engagement. The cost of the Vietnam war shocked a whole lot of people... especially families getting draft notices.
