Pretty sure it's exaggerated but I'm not sure what it is.

History has always made concentration camps to be synonymous with the atrocities of Nazi Germany. But, America has its own dirty secrets about the use of concentration camps. These camps were located in Natchez, Mississippi and were used to corral freed slaves during and after the American Civil War. As slaves were being emancipated from the plantations, their route to freedom usually took them in the vicinity of the Union army forces. Unhappy with the slaves being freed, the army began recapturing the slaves and forced the men back into hard labor camps. The most notorious of the several concentration camps that were established was located in Natchez, MS.

If there was even a hair of truth to it there would be a movie starring Denzel Washington and Morgan Freeman. The Reverend Al would have called for boycotts if it was not the winner of every Oscar that year.

The "devils punchbowl" is a geographical feature that 100% exist, this story is 100% false however.

I lived in Natchez for 21 years and have never heard of this.

The Devils Punch Bowl is a big arse gully north of Natchez, MS where people hike, sort of like Tunica Hills without the waterfalls.
The local Deliverance type hill people generally dump trash and appliances in it.
Rumors are it was formed by the earthquake that caused the Mississippi River to flow backwards.

It is a giant gully that ends in the river and can be entered by boat when the river is up a bit.
This is some pretty rugged terrain and the thought of a fort with concrete walls down there makes me
And yes, folks drive down Cemetery Road and throw refuse in it.
100% not formed by New Madrid earthquake, it is mentioned in far to many historical documents that predate that quake by at least two centuries.

Interesting, I wasn't familiar with the Devil's Punch Bowl story. Perhaps camps were set up but I doubt they were set up to "essentially eradicate the slaves". A stable source of labor to work the fields was a big concern amoung the plantation owners after the civil war. Eradication of the slaves or freedmen (ex-slaves) would have made worse an already screwed up labor situation.

Yeah, there's no way that's true. There's no good way in or out. I'm from the area as well and never heard of the camp story until recently.

It's true, many whites worked alongside their slaves and treated them like family
