I'm sorry but I refuse to believe someone is doing 40-50% of the work other than the chef on to go orders.

Are you sure he was upset by the amount you tipped and that it wasn’t all in your head?

The meals take longer than fifteen minutes if it’s coon to order.
Anything longer than 15 minutes required a manager to visit the table at the high dollar place I supervised. Unless it’s pizza or some specialty cuisine, there aren’t many things that take that long to cook. That’s going to be true for probably 70+% of all restaurants.

And that’s how I know you’ve never worked in a restaurant. Most restaurants have a line of cooks in the back - each working on a different item. The head chef typically handles the meat. That’s a matter of pulling it out of the cooler, seasoning it, and putting it on the grill or in the oven and monitoring the cooking process. Not much else. Everything else is done by someone else.
For to-go orders, someone is taking that food out of the window, putting it in the proper container, making side salads, gathering condiments and sauces (to include pouring them into a separate container if necessary), verifying every item of the order is correct and present, bagging that order, and handling the customer’s payout and any additional requests. All of that can be very time consuming.

Seems fricked up by the restaurant. They should fix that.

No arguments from me on that.

I don’t think it’s necessary to tip 20% for to-go orders, obviously, but tipping something should be a no brainer, because they’re providing a service and mostly aren’t getting paid for their effort by the establishment.
Are UberEats, Doordash, Waitr, etc... drivers tipping them? If the to-go people are really in charge of THAT much, then they must be getting killed over the past year.

I also wanted to circle back around and let you know that everyone in that establishment hates your guts, and if you go there often - they all know your face and you’re known as the guy who doesn’t tip.

Not that you care. But that’s what they’re all thinking. All of them.

Nah you overtipped imo. I never give more than 10% on pizza delivery. Dude ain't making server wages.

If it’s a large restaurant. The smaller ones don’t work this way. My husband is head chef of a small restaurant and many nights it’s just him and another line cook.

Are there any other jobs that are underpaid that you personally decide to subsidize with extra money regardless of the job.
Garbage men do more picking up your trash can than to go order people. Do you tip them?

Those guys don’t give shite to anybody because they’re relying on tips too. The fricked up thing about those services is they don’t typically provide a method for the customer to tip anyone at the actual restaurant, unless that’s changed recently. Many restaurants now require management to handle those orders for that very reason.

For the record, my wife agrees with you. She said I'm an arse

For table service, I tip 15-20% of the bill. If it's excellent service, I tip more.
Delivery is $6 or $7 regardless of bill.
Takeout that I pick up is $0.

I tip drivers, service industry people, maids, and anyone else who provides me a service beyond what their hourly wage covers. I think tipping is good practice in general to show appreciation for a job well done, but especially to those who are relying on it to pay their bills.
Now, whether or not it’s fricked up that they have to rely on that to pay their bills is a different convo for a different thread, probably. But as it stands, since we know they are relying on it, and we choose to patronize establishments that utilize their labor, tipping is the proper thing to do.

I tip 20% everywhere for everything. If it’s under $10 I usually double the order.
I feel like I’m generous.
If they’re terrible service they’ll get 10% but it has to be pretty bad.

I will tip higher than 10% for good service.
I leave myself the option to not tip for crappy service. If you want to schmooze at the next table and ignore me or put me next to the bathroom, I hope the other tables are good tippers.

What on earth were y’all talking about for over 2 minutes? He wasn’t pissed about your $5 tip, he was pissed you wouldn’t shut the frick up.

It hasn't changed. But I'm already paying $5+ in fees plus $5-7 tip for the driver. And I believe that's on top of higher online menu prices than what you'd pay in the restaurant. If another tip box pops up on the delivery sites, then I'll significantly cut down on using the services (limit the use to EXTREME hangovers only).
