My wife and I had one in the first house we bought, which was built in the 80s. We really liked it and have one in the house we have now that I put in. End up with a week's worth of garbage that would fit into a medium sized Ice chest.

Probably used the same technology we used to go to the moon which explains why they are nonexistent these days.

You can still buy them now, but they have gotten very expensive (like $1100 to $1800), though. If something breaks on mine, I order the part and fix it

No. One grandmother had a ditch out back she threw her trash in and my other grandmother had a burn barrel.

Maw Maw had one late 70's early 80's. Had to use a special sized brown paper bag thing. Compressed a typical key then can size into about a foot or so cube. I think it got used until the bags ran out. Or something liquid found the hole in the bag and seeped out into the machine under the counter.

I had one in the house we liver in 15 years ago, we loved it for a purpose. We would throw all the recyclable cans, soda bottles, junk mail in it. We only had to bring the bin out once a month.

Where I lived in Germany, the property had a hole in the ground trash can. The cart way was totally automated. A big multipart arm came out of the dump turck, , opened the lid in the sidewalk, lifted the can up, emptied it, and returned it to its hole in the ground and put the lid back down.

My brother got a slightly larger, light commercial version that was used to compact cardboard. It was about the size of a camper fridge. We welded a splitting wedge on the shaft to split wood. It was so quiet that you could split wood at night and only hear the wood cracking.

They were still around in the 80s. My Mom still has one in her house but I'm not sure if it still works.
