Yes this is what I was trying to say. I had to do this usually once a year in Colorado between winter and summer.

You can purchase just the sensors. Can be bought at Lowe's or HD.

Although if you garage door is relatively new, this shouldn't be a problem. Look at your tension springs at the top of the door and make sure none of them are broken. If one is broken, it is taking too much force for your door to go up/down. You could adjust the force settings, but you are masking the problem. Eventually your garage door motors will grind away, and you'll have to replace the opener.
If the springs are good, then check for misaligned/obstructed sensors, as others have said.

Its 2006 craftsman. I don't see any bind... I can pull the red handle and raise and lower it by hand easily.

Censors are out of alignment. Readjust to where they line up correctly and it will work. Same thing happened on mine a while back.

The problem appears only when trying to close the door? I would think that points to an issue with the photocell sensors.
As others have said, they could be misaligned.
Also, how long have you been in the house? Were you there this time last year? At our old house, the garage faced east/southeast and around this time of year the sun would shine in just the right way to wash out the photocell beam enough to keep the sensor from detecting it. As long as it was in the afternoon or after dark, no problems, but it was a pain in the morning.

yes, it always opens fine from remotes, doorbell button, homelink...its just an issue with closing.
there are no photocell sensors. they were trashed when we bought the house and I haven't bought new ones.

we moved here in feb. now that you mention it, i think the garage door was FUBAR for the first couple months (we were too busy with other projects and just manually raised/lowered it after i tried it out once and it didnt seem to work correctly) and it was probably May before i tried seeing if the motor worked. It worked fine all the way until about a month ago when the weather changed.
so this might be related to the cold and the calibration.

You mentioned the sensors were trashed. Were they jumped out of the circuit? Not sure if they're NO or NC...just a thought.

they're trashed as in nothing left except the little metal brackets screwed to the concrete and some frayed wires.
i think the broken pieces of the plastic housings were around when we bought the house but got swept out with the trash at some point.

I was thinking someone may have wirenutted the leads together to jump it out and one came loose. I have no idea how garage doors are wired.

My sensors have a led light on each side. One is always on to indicate that power is on, the other side only lights up if the beam is properly aligned.
Next try pulling the red handle and unlock the door. Then push the button to see of the carrier will run back and forth. If it does then the door, tracks or rollers could be binding up.
After you get it fixed you should check the amount of down pressure required to make the door reverse. My installer used a roll of paper towels laid on its side. He adjusted so that the door would not crush the cardboard tube inside the roll. There is a screw on the drive motor to increase or decrease the force. You want it set as low as possible for the door to function, especially if you have young children or pets. It will keep them from being crushed by the door.

I had this same problem. It ended up being some small computer board or something.
