diagnose my garage door problem..stopped closing

its been working fine for 7-8 months then suddenly when i push the button to go down it doesn't move and makes a clicking noise.
if i push the button again it tries to move and then goes back up.
if i HOLD THE BUTTON DOWN it will go all the way down.
so i can force it to close by holding the button down the entire time, but of course any vehicle homelinks or remotes are useless.
i dont know what on the actual unit i can adjust..dont want to make it worse.

i should point out the hard-wired 'doorbell' button will close if i hold it down the whole time.
not the remotes.

This. Holding the button down overrides the sensors. They are probably out of alignment.

you need to reset the limits. Search youtube videos. I had similar problem a couple months back

Check that nothing is blocking the sensors at the bottom of the door and/or they are not misaligned.

Have you checked the alignment on the safety sensors? Use a level and a tape measure and make sure they are level and at the same elevation.

funny you should say that; the photo cells are TRASHED. neither one was hooked up at all but it was still working fine without them.
i wonder if the former owner cross-wired the photo-cell switch? can you just buy the photo cells only?

if it is a newer model with force and distance adjustments, it is possible those adjustments some how got off. also possible that there is a bind somewhere in the mechanism or with the actual door and the force limiter is being exceeded. You are over ridding the force or distance limiter with continuous hold on the button.

Exact same thing happened to my mom last week. There was a spider web obscuring one of the sensors. Or your sensors might be misaligned.

thanks! i do see 2 little holes on the side with a "+" and "-" and a little plastic screw to turn.
i was wondering if it might have something to do with those.

My garage wouldn't close and it was the censors being out of alignment. One of them got knocked somehow, just had to realign it and secure it in place and all was good.

Then the motor is out of alignment. It thinks the door is all the way up and stops. You have to reset the stop point.

Kick one of the sensors at the bottom of the door frame and try again.
