Well, cats are pretty far below dogs on the intelligence scale. They also don't emotionally bond in the same degree as dogs.

Nah. Dogs are pretty much like pandas. Without humans, dogs would go extinct

Someone dumped a ShitZu at an intersection down the road from our house. I was pulling weeds, and I saw the car pull away and the dog try to follow it.
The dog then returned to the intersection to wait.
Mornings it would go down to the river, swim, dry off and wait for fishermen to share their lunch with it. Then back to the intersection.
Never came up to our house. Always just waited.
After two weeks, one of the fishermen came up to the house to ask about the dog. I told him all I knew. He started feeding it down at the landing and also at the intersection.
After a week, I saw him slow down, ,stop the car, and go and open the door and invite the dog to go with him. The dog chose to go with its new owner. He waved to me as they drove off.
The dog then returned to the intersection to wait.

There was a border collie in Quinlan, Texas that someone had dumped by the side of the road. Sat in the same place for a week, obviously expecting her owner to return.
Animal Rescue picked up the dog, which is now adopted.
Dog dumpers can go to hell.

They can kill all the insects and rodents they want to kill.
I have trained my two outdoor turdcats to leave the birds alone. I've had less success on leaving lizards alone.
One sleeps under the bird feeder and the birds don't care any more.

There are a lot of dogs that would be just fine, but yeah, some dogs like miniature schnauzers probably wouldn’t last too well
