Choosing to earn a living from home once the pandemic ends is a privilege that you should pay for, according to strategists from Deutsche Bank AG’s research arm.

“Working from home will be part of the ‘new normal’ well after the pandemic has passed,” the strategists led by Luke Templeman wrote in a note. “We argue that remote workers should pay a tax for the privilege.”

The team propose a 5% levy for those who work from home on a regular basis and not because of a government lockdown mandate. Such a measure could raise $48 billion a year in the U.S. and about 16 billion euros ($18.8 billion) in Germany, they say, to fund subsidies for low-income earners and essential workers who are unable to work remotely.

The Argument to Tax Work-From-Home Benefits

Lol!!

I need to charge those bastards for some square footage in rent of what they are saving by not having to pay for an office building.

Geez, I'm not using the roads they funded by taking my money by force of arms. If anything I deserve a refund.

Why not have companies compensate people for their commutes to and from work?

My favorite is in California where they mandate electric cars but cannot even guarantee electricity.

This I support. My office building probably averages out to about 500 per person, per month.

I agree with this.
The only people who should be in favor of this are people who own commercial office real estate that's going to be empty due to working from home or restaurants/bars in downtown areas that make most of their revenue from weekday business lunches and happy hour.

There will already be a tax on these workers. In the form of lower pay. Companies are not going to pay people the same amount when they work from home unless they are a superstar.

So then are they going to hold companies responsible for wanting to cut salaries for at-home workers?

Yeah, I didn't think so.
