I had one place add a 22% tip at a restaurant that you order at a counter and fix your own drink ! Market Eatz in Lafayette ... never again.
I think it’s different in that it wasn’t across the board, just for black customers. I’m not a fan of auto adding tips, or doing away with tipping entirely as both do a disservice to the whole point of tipping for quality service, but something has to be done for servers who give quality service and get screwed by customers who don’t know any better or care to leave an appropriate tip for services rendered. IMO. If I own a restaurant that it’s patrons regularly screw my wait staff, I’m going to add it in to the food margin and if and when they get the shaft, if they performed admirably, then I’ll leave it up to the front house manager to let the house cover it. I’d do this for no other reason than to keep a quality front of the house in place and not deal with attrition.

It wasn’t a policy across the board. For all we know it was an isolated event. Maybe the server just got screwed by back to back tables of black people not tipping. Does that make what he did right? Absolutely not. But sometimes there are explanations for events that aren’t as nefarious as they seem.
I think it’s much more absurd that Coca Cola had a presentation that listed a set of attributes that white people have then said to be less white.

I certainly don’t think it’s systemic or even epidemic, more like a one off, but in this hyper sensitive world in which we live, it was very dumb, and I think there are other ways to deal with it.

It very clearly is not systemic. If it were systemic they wouldn't have to override the system then lie about it.

I would have melted hard if I had a 20% gratuity charge added to my bill for a party of 2 if it wasn't a publicized policy.
FWIW this story always seemed very probable, and I'm willing to bet this has happened plenty of times at Desi restaurants. I've always found their waiters to be very rude and condescending.

The funny thing is if I’m at a very nice restaurant and this happened then I wouldn’t have even cared unless the service was subpar.
