Denmark plans to reopen day care centres and schools on April 15 as a first step to gradually relax a three-week lockdown to curb the spread of the new coronavirus, the country’s prime minister said on Monday.

It is now trying to balance the need to keep its population safe and the economic risks of a deep recession, tough decisions that many other governments around the world have lying ahead of them.

“This will probably be a bit like walking the tightrope. If we stand still along the way we could fall and if we go too fast it can go wrong. Therefore, we must take one cautious step at a time,” Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen told a media briefing.

Frederiksen day care centres and schools for children in first to fifth grade will reopen on April 15, which will allow parents to return to a normal workday.

All remaining restrictions including a ban on gatherings of more than 10 people would stay in place until at least May 10, while a ban on larger gatherings would remain in place until August.

Are you advocating that we stay out of schools until there is a vaccine?

This is the fear mongering.

Who says anything will happen if schools open back up?
Every Covid19 prognosticator on TV has been having to adjust their forecasts on a daily basis.

Yes. Covid-19 is a bad cold. Hot take

It’s far less than a bad cold among school children, which is what was contemplated. They will infect people at home, of course, but Denmark is planning a track and quarantine response. My money says it works.

Cool. So let’s not pretend that a runny nose will be the only consequence of this decision like the other poster was implying.

How do you plan a track and quarantine response if the child is asymptomatic?

There is no perfect plan though so I will be interested to see how this works.

There is always the Ezekiel Emmanuel plan of shutting down the country for 18 months.

Is that more to your liking?

If this is the logic, we would never open schools again. frick off.

It is hilarious how extreme they have become.

Hell, most of them don’t seem to think that the economic impact is anything we should worry about at all and we’ll just “bounce right back” after 5 or 6 months of this.

Absolutely not. I just think it is silly to think this plan won’t have any consequences which is what was implied by the post I responded to.

I think it will be important for us to watch and learn from as US kids return to school next fall (Realistically, I think there is no chance they return to school this spring).

I think my post is getting misconstrued as critical of Denmark’s plan, which it was not. It was simply a response to a suggestion that because kids aren’t susceptible, there will be no issues with this plan.

Consequences that won’t be a “disaster” and whatever spread happens will take place no matter when schools open up. 2 weeks from now or 10 months from now.

It was called a disaster. That’s a little more hyperbolic than saying it could cause some issues.

Give me the cost of lawsuits over the cost of a shutdown economy.
