Robin Williams did it for that reason and I never blamed him a bit.

I had no idea this is why. I thought it was depression.

I can't say I would have the guts to do that but I don't fault anyone in that situation that would.

Robin Williams

Before Robin Williams was diagnosed with Lewy Body Dementia, it was reported that he had been experiencing paranoia, confusion, insomnia, constipation and lacking the ability to smell. For many, the wide range of early symptoms — not all related to brain function — makes Lewy Body Dementia difficult to diagnose.

Dementia should be on the legal euthanasia list. I don’t want to live like that. I’ve known a few who’ve had it and it’s been a very heavy burden for their loved ones. It takes a toll on everyone close to you.

Rare at 54? Probably.

Very common within the White House at almost 80? All but confirmed.

Highly advise long term care insurance for your loved ones if you can see the onset of this disease. It will save you a lot of financial headaches down the road.

Are the early onset cases hereditary?

Can be. It runs in his family apparently

Yes BIL had early onset of Alzheimer’s in his mid 50’s. Super intelligent doctor with no family history of that disease. He lingered for years until he passed at 61. He didn’t recognize his own children at the end. So sad and just a terrible disease. I'm sure many people on TD would recognize his name.

I had to drive him home from our mother-in-law's funeral when he was in the middle stages of the disease. He was still very cognizant but you could tell he wasn't the same man anymore. We got near his house but then drove around in circles for a while because he couldn't tell me exactly where his house was. (he had remarried and lived in a different house). That's when the reality of the disease and the effect it was having on him hit me.

Is this pretty rare?

This is actually becoming allot more common. My younger brother has dementia at 41. He is not doing well and is slowly incurring other health problems now. The University of Michigan is doing research on this and is finding out it is caused by a dormant gene.

How old was Pat Head Summit, UT women's basketball coach, when she was diagnosed?

Early 60s.

With early onset the patient dies quickly. Older patients last longer for some reason.

Thankfully it isn't common in my family. We suspected my grandfather had it before his stroke but he was also 72 and a former drinker. He was never officially diagnosed but things had slowly deteriorated for about year prior.

My friends wife had it around that age. She couldn’t even remember to eat if left alone so it caused serious problems and he had to get care around the clock since he still worked. Really sad. Each time we saw them she had never met me.

Jesus, man. That's tough to hear. 41 is too young.

Barret Eugene "Barry" Hansen (born April 2, 1941), known professionally as "Dr. Demento"

Now at age 80, the name choice might not be so witty....

I've read doing things like crossword puzzles, sudoku, and jigsaw puzzles really help.

That and exercise.

That is a terrible shame. I'm older than that and seem to be in reasonably good health, but my dad had a heart attack at my age, so I do worry about things.

I can't complain though as it's been a full life already, so everything forward is gravy.

my mother and her brothers and sisters all had it.

terrible. my uncle lived in gretna and came to resent his daughter taking care of him; she gave up 5 years of her life to devote to him and by the end he was calling her filthy names, accusing her of stealing and physically attacking her. it was heartbreaking. she would call me and just cry her eyes out.

i cant imagine slipping into incoherence. i hope i have the courage to eat a 12 gauge before that happens if that happens to me. no way i'll be a burden to my wife and kids. they don't deserve to waste years of their life with someone who wont even know who they are in a few years.

eta i'm 55 so this is definitely on my mind alot.

Was reading an article last month on gut inflammation and a link between brain diseases. Getting tested for inflammation and adjusting seems to be a preventative measure.

What do you mean by gut inflamation? Chrons or just eating shitty and not getting enough fiber?
