While it is good news, be careful tying those two comments together. When speaking of windfield and a weakening (potentially major or formerly major) hurricane, that wind field is quite likely to expand. I've heard it best described as a figure skater spinning with their arms tucked in. To slow down, they spread their arms. The energy of that spin is dissipated by the wider form of the skater. As she slows down her arms spread more. A hurricane works in a similar way. It is why a powerful hurricane that is weakening at or near landfall is a major issue. That energy (windfield) spreads out. Wind moves water. So, it can increase the wind field and the threat/impact of surge.
