Maybe one of the OT pilots can chime in as to why an aircraft would need to perform a fuel dump in an emergency situation?

I'll give you one guess as to why a plane would dump all its fuel in a situation that might require an emergency landing. You can do this...

Less weight I can believe.

Fire risk? Not quite so much.

Jet fuel isn’t particularly explosive and having full tanks, as opposed to emptier ones containing a lot of air and fuel vapors, are safer from the explosion perspective.

My guess is that he needed to maneuver quickly and did a fuel dump in order to cut weight significantly for better response.

Could be that the plane was too heavy to land. Not uncommon for a plane to take off with more fuel than it can land with.

Usually they just circle them to burn the fuel. Must have been a more pressing emergency to dump the fuel.

exactly, it's a weight issue

I mean, it is modified kerosene, but for all intents and purposes.

I get the vapor thing and considered that. However if there was a fire I think NOT having thousands of gallons of fuel pooling out from the plane would be preferable.

It's flammable enough to melt steel beams in skyscrapers.

I was always under the impression a plane full of fuel isn't safe to land because it was way too heavy and puts stress on it so they dump in emergency situations for a safer landing

The guys I knew that were running waste Jet A in their diesel pickups were adding oil to it. Jet A is pretty dry as for as lubrication properties.

Well the OT just found who is clueless about the aviation industry and it didn't take long at all.

Yeah all that post needed was a connection between Delta's diversity hiring practices and their fuel dumping policies.

Why dump fuel? Because he’s too heavy to land with a full fuel load and he needs to get back in the ground ASAP.
