It probably has a lot to do with the state of the fuel. If it mists it burns more easily. When an plane crashes that liquid is probably going to mist making it easier to ignite.
When I was a kid I used to play with fire a lot. I used Varsol often as an fuel. Putting it in an atomizer make it burn very easily. Whereas putting it in a vat did nothing when dropping a match into it.
Gasoline, OTOH burns easily especially the vapors.

Umm nah.
The fuel is still liquid in the tanks. They are pumping it out thru small nozzles into high speed air. Last minute attempt to lower the landing weight.

Why the frick is an airplane “dumping fuel”?!? Go frick yourselves, air industry. And wonder why the price of a plane ticket has gone up exponentially... it’s because apparently they’re throwing away the fricking fuel we as customers are paying for.
fricking dumb.

Not sure why you have the down votes. This is sort of true, but the better word would be vaporize. The jet fuel is a combustible fluid that has a fairly high flash point, similar to diesel fuel. When vaporized it becomes ignitable. A plane crashing can cause this.
To settle the argument in this thread though, basically the only difference in considering a fluid/fuel as flammable vs combustible (not ignitable at normal conditions) is a flashpoint of 100F. Anything with a flash point less than 100F is flammable. Fuels with a flash point at 100F or greater (jet fuel) are combustible. If the temperature rises above that point, enough vapor can form to cause ignition.

Flash point of jet is right at 100

I would imagine dumping what is highly flammable jet fuel, anywhere on land, is a bad idea.
Jet Fuel is essentially Diesel fuel.

Jet fuel isn't highly flammable
It's kerosene.
Amazing how many don't know this.
Glad to see so that the OT has so many truthers.
Just think if the plane dumped thermite onto that playground. But then again thermite isn't flammable either.

Hmm... I thought it was... hence all the fireballs and major fires and explosions upon crashes...
well to be fair its not like most people think
its more like diesel then gas in that it burns but isnt explosive for the most part.
they put additives in the fuel to prevent flashing and that makes it less explosive but it still burns, just not like gas does
