Brent Rhodes. He went to Belaire High School in Baton Rouge. Great guy. Great mascot. He drove a blue Cutlass in high school, but not sure if that was the car in the wreck. We heard the trailer sheared the top of the car off, and the whole incident happened so quickly he had no chance to react. A terrible thing.

Henry Lee Lucas was active in this part if the world back then. I don't know why but I have always thought he was in involved in her disappearance.

Interesting topic and I knew about a few of those mentioned but definitely not all of them.
In addition to Derrick Todd Lee, I remember thinking a few years ago (from reading TD) that there were possibly two other serial killers in the BR area during the late 90s (if you include the DC Sniper guy).
One that I'm not sure if it's been mentioned were the one or two Indian PhD students that were killed near campus (maybe their apartment?).
Ben Wynne was about my age and happened shortly after the drinking age changed from 18 to 21. It was actually a little difficult to drink in LSU bars for a year or two after that.

Sean Gillis was the other serial killer in BR.
The two indian student were murdered in a robbery at there apartment which was right off campus. I was at LSU at that time. Everyone got the text about a shooter.

I’m surprised no one has said Wally Pontiff.

I mentioned him in the OP. That one may have rocked LSU more than any other from my generation.

He lived on Burgin. He worked at the Circle K on Lee Drive. I am sure many of us bought beer from him at some point in the 90’s.

What's weird is that an actual Pontiff died just a few years later.

Roughly what year did Smitty do it? Worked with a girl who was on the other end of such a situation.

I don’t think this name has been mentioned but who is the most recognized name of a former student who died too soon:
Alex Box
Alex Box

Smitty was the guy who made roses out of beer cans.
He came speak at a rehab I was in one time a long time ago. His drug was crack cocaine and his story was amazing to hear how far he had come. The black WAFB guy, my mind is blanking out on me also came to speak. He died a few years later due to his addiction.
Damn, what was his name? His brother was on the radio until a few years back.

Mickey Shunick wasn’t LSU or Baton Rouge but it was very surreal the way catching Brandon Scott Lavergne unfolded on the OT. I remember when they arrested him, thinking “I recognize that guy” and it was all because the BIL (can’t remember the poster’s name) had posted his pic here about 10 days prior saying he was concerned about his sister-in-law’s bf

There’s really only one acceptable answer here for #1.... That was the death of multiple Lynyrd Skynyrd band members in the plane crash where they were flying to Baton Rouge to perform at LSU
Came here to post this and can’t believe I had to scroll to page 4 to see this even mentioned.
