How much money is being spent on all this? What is the state University system budget deficit? The money could be spent on something to benefit everyone instead of on something that benefits no one. Common sense has never been the strong suit of the left.

So your argument is that even if the logic and conclusions drawn by the "take the statues down" faction are wrong, people should acquiesce to them anyway because otherwise it may affirm false premises in their own minds?

Do you not see how asinine that is and how appeasement only incentivizes their behavior and tactics?

It's like how restaurants deal with a-hole customers. You reward a dick with a free meal simply for showing their arse, they are just going to do it over and over.

Did you really care about them before all of this?

I couldn't give two wet shits either way. What puts a bug up my arse is the fiscal irresponsibility of it all just for Mitch to pad his resume for the next office he runs for.

There was no outcry from voters for this to be done, there was no attempt to put such an action on a ballot. It was just Mitch spending hundreds of thousands of tax dollars to promote himself, but then that's what Mitch has always done.

Better to have the past be embraced than to run away from it or try and hide it.

As far as the whole statue thing is concerned. I'm more concerned with the people who let a bunch of cement and iron/brass/copper affect them so much. To me, thats just pathetic.

I honestly dgaf about what happens to a few statues. What I do care about is the waste of tax payer funds on something that ultimately doesn't matter, when you have other areas that could desperately use said funding, such as: updates on city infrastructure, combating an ever increasing crime epidemic, and an under-funded thinly spread out police force, just to name a few. And that's not even touching on the potential ramifications of this furthering the divide of already strained race relations, just so some dumbfrick pandering politician can further his own personal gain.

JJ while I agree they are just statues and I understand how they can represent things that are not great about the south, There is also the matter that this is opening a can of worms.

1-destroying history doesn't make it go away. Use it to teach a lesson...don't eradicate it.

2-kowtowing to the vocal minority is asking to create more division...not inclusion

3- where does it stop? the groundwork has been laid to tell people "yell loudly that your feelings are hurt and we will destroy shite for you"

I really don't care. frick with Andrew Jackson and then I will have issues but I don't see this going any further.

Like others have said it's the funds/resources being wasted on this that's the main problem.

Landrieu is a crook so he'd find other ways to waste funds on stupid shite.

Not going to let it bother me too much but I do get annoyed by the fact that 5 people were shot and two were killed last night while an underpaid and understaffed police force stood around and watched chunks of metal being removed.

They are statues. They mean very little to only a small amount of people.

Small amount of vocal people that have nothing better to do.

My issue is "where does it end?"

meh, im over it

its the wasting of millions of dollars worth of city resources when so many other issues need addressed i find disappointing

a lot of this from everyone I know, but quite possibly everyone is a little upset that we are pandering to a group of people/race that has done VERY LITTLE for its own betterment within the city. Residents of NOLA are tired of the violent crimes which are largely and statistically comprised of young black men. Its time the black community in New Orleans takes a good hard look at itself and stops pointing fingers and making excuses.

Well, when's the last time you had a discussion with someone about a statue? Never?

The anti-statue protestors were mostly white.

I don't care about statues. I didn't even know where Beauregard was located. White League was indefensible.

Would have made more sense to sell the Davis statue. Lee should stay up and they can just go back to the street name being Tivoli Circle.

Why are black people worried enough to take off of work and protest about them? The same argument can be made. Black people acting butt hurt over these monuments tells me that they still believe there is slavery in this country. Nobody has a living family member that was a slave, black people have their own TV network, singles website, colleges, multiple black only groups and organizations, and we've had a black president. Slavery happened, and it was terrible, but to still be blaming slavery for your situation in life or protesting some monument over someone who was alive during that terrible time is retarded.
