Your story wasn't funny at all.

Time is really the best way to get a deal.
Having been in sales before I can most assuredly say you're wrong in your assumption that by wasting a salesperson's time you will somehow naturally end up getting discounts or additional incentives. Only shitty sales people with a customer care background will invest hours of time with an indecisive customer in the hopes that it materializes into a sale. Most decent salespeople decide within a short amount of time whether the juice is worth the squeeze, and if it's not then they wont bother entertaining your bullshite. Time is money. I wouldn't waste my whole day with a bunch of fricking tire kickers.

I don't get the OP. Last car I bought stickered for 28,000. I walked in and did my deal for 24,500 and got exactly what I wanted for my trade. I financed through them with Chase and got 2.4%
At one point the guy made the usual comment about how they needed to make money on this deal and I said you and I both know you are making money so are we doing this deal or not because I'm not spending my day with you.
I was in and out in under 90 minutes.

So, you´re trying to buy a used Toyota at a Hyundai dealership?

Why WOULDNT a dealership ask for a deposit to hold a vehicle for you until Saturday? What if someone walks in the door tomorrow and wants to buy the car on the spot? Are they supposed to just pass up a sale for some guy with no investment who may or may not show up on Saturday - or who may try to negotiate & walk out? That would be stupid.
For someone who used to sell cars, you sure don't seem to understand how the business works.
You misunderstood.
Jesus was asking for a 3000$ payment that was nonrefundable.
This was not a deposit. A standard deposit on a vehicle of this value is 1000 or less, held and returned at time of finance if the buyer chooses.
This guy was more concerned with the 150$ he would pull off of that and see on tomorrow's paycheck than he was with the dealership making a sale.
Sad but true.
Calling off the hunt for the weekend anyways.

Holy frick, your life must really suck if you felt the need to pour all that out on a message board.

I've bought 3 vehicles (I realize that's not a lot), and each one was at least an all day process (one took 3 days). I am talking about one I'm serious about pulling the trigger on. I guess it's kind of negotiating, but I never jump at the first offers, especially on trade in. I'll leave to think about it, get other trade in values to be sure, compare to another dealership sometimes, etc. But I never haggle like, "give me 2k off and I'll buy". I've never even said anything about what the other dealerships offer. They always call back with a better offer or have one waiting when I return. Could be a fluke, I'm no expert negotiator for sure.
And as far as walking in with cash, it doesn't help with the deal in my experience. I only said that to show that I can have the money in hand fully expecting to spend it, and I'll still hesitate. I think cash makes you look like a more serious buyer so they may offer a better price faster, but if you are buying and they know it, you can get the same deal with credit.
