The closest indy to me for my make is a fricking racket lol. Tried to charge 10k all in for a fuggin clutch job. I laughed and hung up. Found a place on the northshore that did it for 2k.

Previous experience with this shop: car had an wiring harness that needed replacement. Told them on the phone that I think that was the issue and wanted a quote to replace. Service advisor basically called me an idiot and that in all their years of experience blah blah blah they have never changed out that harness and that is certainly not what was causing my issues. Well after I brought it they called me two days later and said "well it's this harness that needs replacement..."

Needless to say I won't be using them ever again.

Pretty much zero trust. This is because of some realllllly shitty experiences and from stories of buddies that were former dealership mechanics.

Went to Goodyear once. Requested new tire, swap out spare, change oil and replace windshield wipers. This was before I started to learn and do everything myself. Get in the car once it’s “done” after waiting 2-3 hours and looked at the wiper blades. Looked crappy. So I get out and notice the same tire was on since no colored threads were present. Check the spare and it’s the same. All after I paid. I went back in and explained everything and stated I wanted to see, with my own eyes, everything completed or a full refund. They allowed me to go back and watch it all. They said “we changed the oil for sure” and I made them drain that and start all over again too.

Buddy worked at a dealership and said this older guy came in complaining about a sound coming from his new Roush Mustang. It’s a whistling sound he said. So my buddy tries to explain it’s the supercharger that makes that sound. Guy was a jerk about it and kept cutting my buddy off from talking and said “fix the damn thing. Get rid of the noise and do your damn job.” So he got a new $6-$7000 supercharger that day. He said the guy left and called to say thanks and that the car stopped making the noise.

100% don't trust. I don't even take it to the dealer during the free time period of oil changes and tire rotations

I once had a Cadillac that would always have issues shortly after taking it to the dealership for oil changes or other work. I always found it odd.

I remember the days when I totally avoided dealership repairs because I believed it was all a scam. Although I had a Toyota which I bought because of its strong repair history, it seemed like I was constantly taking it back to various independent locally owned repair shops to have problems fixed that they claimed to have fixed during the last visit. I even visited factory authorized service centers that claimed to use genuine Toyota parts. Non dealership repairs were frequent, shitty, and I thought them to be cheaper than dealerships.

When I bought a new Toyota about 20 years ago, my income had improved tremendously so I decided to price compare repairs over a few years. Maybe this new Toyota was better built. But in the 20 years of owning it, I never had to return to get the same issue fixed more than once. The cost comparisons only seemed negligibly more. That car has been the most reliable vehicle I ever owned.

I still get the oil changed elsewhere, replace wipers myself, get tires replaced at Discount Tire (the GOAT), and do some minor repairs myself, but I have never had an experience with this dealership that led me to believe I was better off getting major repairs done at some independent auto repair joint.

I paid for oil changes for life and an extended warranty. I’ll bring it back to them for everything. I also know the managers though.

Story sort of related to some of the posts:

My daughter(no pics) needed an oil change and went to Jiffy Lube. She called me crying saying they wanted $160 after all was said and done. I asked her if they asked her to do anything other than the oil change. She said no. Mad dad was at Jiffy Lube with the quickness. Final Bill was <$50 when we got done “talking”.

Just remember this - their oil change technicians probably worked at mcdonald's the week before.

This is true. My son got a job at a dealership changing oil. It was the first job he ever had. But the same thing happens at other oil change places. You can’t avoid it. The cheapest labor will always be used to perform the simplest tasks.

That's why I call them stealerships.
They don't fix anything, just replace parts and components at a price that may be inflated beyond comparable dealerships in other states. In BR, make sure you compare your invoice part prices with TX stealerships for example.

Never trust the stealership.

Was able to break the wife of it quickly, showed her what Toyota wanted to charge her $300 for...cleaning some aluminum tube to the intake side the TBI because it was dirty. They claimed they would have to disassemble the entire thing and detail clean it, 3 hours labor.

2 minutes and > $.50 worth of carb cleaner and it was shiny again.

Just canceled my '22 Lightning reservation this week. The incompetency of the dealership telling me they lost my paperwork and will have to refund and start over was a sign from the Heavens that I didn't need to be a guinea pig for Gen 1 Lightning in the 1st place. I'll take my arse to Houston and buy a damn Tesla or another EV next year when Uncle Joe makes gas $5 gallon.

I never have my wife take her vehicle for service. I make sure I’m the one to do it because they take advantage over women alllll the time. Women and old folks.

I bought my wife a 2015 minivan in 2016. In 2017 we got a minor recall so my wife brought it up to the dealership. 4 hours later she calls me listing off this itemized list of “issues”. 2 years old and less than 50,000 miles and they wanted nearly 3500 to make all the repairs. Told her tell them thank you, but no thank you and leave. She calls back obviously stressed saying the service manager is insinuating that it’s not safe to drive. I had to get on the phone and tear the guy a new one. The “issues” were alignment, brake pads had 40% left, fuel system needed to be cleaned, air filter was dirty, and two tires were slightly more worn because of the alignment.

My mechanic did all the work for $800 including two new tires.

Sometimes it ain't worth the hassle. Some dealerships charge 120 just to look at the GD thing, plus time off work.

A couple of years ago, my elderly mother brought her Accord to Royal Honda in Metairie for an oil change. She told the service advisor to check the interior dome light as it stopped working. She waited in their customer lounge while they changed her oil. After awhile, the advisor came to her and told her that the wiring going to the dome light went bad and they would have to replace. Parts and labor--around $200.

She told them not to do the repair as it was too costly. A few days later when I was at her house, she mentioned to me that Royal had told her it would cost $200 to fix the dome light. I took the dome light bulb out and went to Auto Zone and bought a new bulb for a few dollars. Inserted new bulb in light, and yep, light worked again.

SCAM!!!

My son travels for work and cannot find the time to have a towing package and lights installed on his 2020 Ford Fusion.
He calls local dealership and they quote him ~$800 for the package with pigtail for trailer lights.
He picks himself up off the floor and calls a UHaul place in Alexandria that does these.
Same exact type of setp is ~ $220 out the door with warranty on the whole kit.

Stealership is correct!

Almost identical here except mine involved replacing a 10-amp cab fuse for $1.
