This wasn’t a for-hire situation, it was a dumbass driving above his pay grade under the influence.

50mph+ at night is insane, especially in a river like the Tickfaw.

We run at night a lot down the MS river (into the gulf) and even with radar, Nightvision, etc we aren’t going that fast. Typically 30mph or so so boat stays on step. Absolutely no reason to be running that fast at night.

Only exception MIGHT be in the open gulf with a full moon and calm seas. Even then that’s sketchy.

It's dangerous to run a boat in the daylight in the summer on a weekend in louisiana on bar routes. Very few people understand the rules of navigation, many of them are drunk, many going way too fast. Most don't even know who is supposed to stand on vs yield in a basic collision course situation. There's a reason the port side light is red and most don't even understand that.

At night on a weekend on a bar route, no sir. It's a miracle it doesn't happen every Saturday and Sunday in the summer.

Saying there is no license requirement to operate a boat in Louisiana is pretty misleading.

People born after 1983 are required to have taken boater’s safety and carry their certification to operate a small recreational vessel. For almost everyone younger than 41, you’ve got to have that card to drive a boat… same as a drivers license, so I don’t understand why there’s an argument over this.

Add in the fact that if you fail to produce it upon request it is a ticket and a fine.

I got asked to show it damn near weekly on the diversion the first few years I had it. Probably because I was a teenager piloting a ski boat full of other teenagers.

Haven’t been asked for it in years, but it is a REQUIREMENT to have to pilot a boat in the state of Louisiana if you are born after 84.

Sure as frick seems like a license to me.

For a drivers license you actually have to go in front of other human beings and prove you at least some basic physical capabilities driving a car

For a boating certificate you simply answer some multiple choice questions online.

It’s not the same as a drivers license. It doesn’t expire, insurance is not required, there is no skills test, no vision test, etc…

The boaters safety is more akin to getting your hunters safety course done.

Can you get ticketed for not producing said card?

It’s actually considered an endorsement. Like having a motor cycle endorsement on your license. You can take that certificate of completion from the boaters education to your DMV and have it added on back of your actual drivers license. I was born in 80. I took the class not even required to just to help understand the rules of boating.this should be a requirement for everyone to have just to understand the basics of navigation lights bouys and more.

But having that class doesn’t prevent a moron from running 50+ at night on a river at midnight. You can’t fix stupid

So you have a card. That is required to operate something. If you don’t have it, you get a ticket and a fine..

Comparing a drivers license and what is required to get it and a boaters Ed certificate is something. Go ahead if you’d like but they aren’t the same

A major difference besides the simple fact the boaters ed requires no actual Boat driving, you simply can wait til you are 40 and you never have to take the course or have the certificate at all….

I’m not comparing anything to anything. That’s y’all. I’m not arguing the merits of the license, how effective it is, or any of that.

I am simply correcting the incorrect belief that we don’t have a required boating license In the state of Louisiana.

We do. It has been required now for 20 years.

Now. It is in no way shape or form comparable to a drivers license because like you have said, it is simply a multiple choice question test online and you get your card.

It also is not enforced nearly to the rate it was back when it was new. Or maybe they only target young boaters still and simply assume adults are compliant.

The license is a complete joke. But it is a license. And it is required by law to operate a boat with an engine over 10hp in the state of Louisiana.

But it really isn’t required at all. Once you reach 40 you don’t need it at all. Hard to say it’s truly required to have a license to drive a boat when the majority of boaters aren’t required and every single person eventually ages into it not being required as well

Wake up people. The ones doing the arguing about it dont even have a boat. They just like to argue. That’s what is wrong with this world.

I didn’t say that they were the same. I said: “you’ve got to have that card to drive a boat…. Same as a drive license ”

Born after 93 and drive a boat, need the card. Drive a car, need the DL. The bottom line is that it’s necessary.

That’s not how it works.
