Per Wiki - The dead Internet theory is a conspiracy theory that asserts, due to a coordinated and intentional effort, the Internet now consists mainly of bot activity and automatically generated content manipulated by algorithmic curation to control the population and minimize organic human activity.

I've been seeing and suspecting this for years but only heard mention of the term "Dead Internet Theory" this morning on CNBC. What is most alarming is how few people have the ability to discern between AI/Bot content and real.

Human beings are really, really bad with statistics and have not truly evolved to handle immediate, international data. Mix that with advertising employing psychological warfare techniques (Skinner's box, ect), and you have a populace that's basically operating as bots as well. I'm fascinated and terrified for the next 20 years.

I would change the name to “Dead Brain Theory”. I do see people online and social media who are easily manipulated and swayed by any given news article or internet rumor. But those people are dumb as frick. Most normal people of above average intelligence (excluding old boomers who have zero sophistication about the digital word) have a healthy skepticism of what they see online imo.

I have no idea what happened there. I used to contribute on that board on a regular basis, and now I poke in every now and then and it's absolutely insane. I miss the days where we had good conversations, Rex was actually fun to debate, Tuba was still a nutter.

Dead Internet Theory has been a term for a while now.

I remember the old internet. Probably the new internet to some, but I was 8 years old and we had AOL. It was 99-2000. Forums, flash sites, chat rooms, AIM. It was mesmerizing. We were taught how to Google in 4th grade before the teachers really even knew what it was.

Started to learn HTML/CSS and got into forums doing that. It was like any niche interest you could think of there was a forum for it. I liked that time.

It was so awesome when Reddit first launched, IMO it was the peak of the internet. Then Reddit was slowly monopolized, first by foreign actors who saw how much influence it had, now it's completely overrun by bots. You can still get good info from there, but you have to stay niche.

Nowadays I stay here, I go to niche subreddits, niche discords, a curated YT homepage, and then I get info from blogs that are still up.

Or exacerbate the negative aspects of that activity by posting divisive, fake, or regurgitated content with the intent to stir up discontent.

Indians have done to the internet what black culture has done to malls.

Unrelated but reminds me of:

The Soviet and now Russian “Dead Hand” program.

Wikipedia Article Link

“An example of fail-deadly and mutual assured destruction deterrence, it can initiate the launch of the Russian intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) by sending a pre-entered highest-authority order from the General Staff of the Armed Forces, Strategic Missile Force Management to command posts and individual silos if a nuclear strike is detected by seismic, light, radioactivity, and pressure sensors even with the commanding elements fully destroyed.”

What it boils down to.
We only seek the gratification of whatever response we are looking for. Who cares if it's a bot or human? How would most know once they've achieved the success they were seeking? They've already gotten what they want. No need to dig deeper.

I feel like most of the comments in news and advertising fb posts are bots. They are alot of one liners and very similar.
