I don't think it is trashy when they are infants. Easy enough for the parents to keep them clean and infection free.

On the list of trashy things, I'm now sure how this even registers. If people don't want to pierce their daughter's ears as an infant, that's perfectly fine too.

How anyone could have a strong opinion on this is beyond me. A baby has a much better chance of getting a diaper rash than their ear infected.

Agreed

My daughters ears were pierced when she was an infant. It didn’t hurt her, no ear infections that were due to the piercing and we do turn them.

I also married into a traditional Mexican family where this was culturally acceptable and practiced

I got mine done when I was like 5. I didn't care for it properly and my right ear swelled up so much it basically swallowed the earring. Had to go to the doctor to remove earring and let holes close up.

Didn't get them pierced again until I was 12.

Evidence straight from the horse's mouth on why its best to do when they are babies.

she is. yet her own mother didn't care for her little girl's 5 year old's ears properly and this chick has the nuts to cast stones on parents who actually take care of their children.

So lets just dress our kids in old ugly clothes too while were at it. Hell why even put a bow in a girls hair at a young age. They don't care and don't have any say so. Is this some new revelation that parents are pleased with the way their children look?

Because your essentially getting this process over with while the child is young. A parent can take care of the cleaning much easier than a child.

My mom did clean it. But a 5 year old being a typical 5 year old....I likely touched dirty stuff without washing my hands and touched my ears. Unless she is running around cleaning my ears 24/7 each time I touch them(and as a 5 year I would guess I touched them all the time cause it was new)....that’s enough to get it infected.

ETA: there are clearly more trashy things than this...but I still think it is just trashy to pierce a baby’s ears. And I’m not alone in this view.

yep. more reason to do it as babies when they stay in clean environments cared for already 24/7.

but hey, it was so brave of you to make that decision at 5 yrs old. or even 12 yrs old when you were peer pressured when all your other friends had them done. You've literally brought nothing to your argument and even hurt your argument every step of the way. But you're a nurse so omg, you are the speaker of all things medical.

She makes valid points

But I couldn’t judge someone’s level of trashy off of this when there’s things much worse

Nobody is stopping you. If you want to poke unnecessary holes in your baby that is your business.

You have a 24 hour nanny that has eyes on your baby every single second?

I guess your baby has never gotten a cold or anything because of this “clean environment” they are in 24/7.

You're the only one that claims it's child neglect

Our babies were always cared for 24/7. Quite the shame that you and your children were not. And yes, my daughter never had the first ear infection due to her ear getting pierced. You are correct, the risk does go up as a child gets older and more active. Quite stupid that you think a piercing is some life lesson on learning how to take care of something. There's 1 million other things on how to teach children lessons etc in life. The only point you continue to make is that you are a judgmental bimbo and simply you think its trashy. All the while, you are the typical story of a child whose mother couldn't take care of her 5 yr old properly. Sad.

Please post where I said it was neglect

I said it is unnecessary, no benefit to the baby, and a potential source of infection.

I also said someone valued the baby looking pretty over their health. Because....again...it is only done to make the baby look better and if you do it you basically ignore that there is a risk of infection and that professional groups of pediatricians advise against it in babies. Cause hey....those baby pics are important too right?! That’s not neglect by any means. Maybe unwise decision making, but not neglect.

Sorry you are getting so upset by this

Little girls should have ears pierced at a couple months old. Some babies would like like boys without.

This is not an argument against babies. This is an argument against piercing period, kids of all ages. And again, the risk of infection goes up when kids get older and more active as you and your mother of the year candidate proved.

So someone physically had eyes on that baby every second of every day? Even when they were asleep?

Geez that had to be costly

These threads are so much fun btw. You guys get so mad about this topic. It’s always fun seeing these reactions

She's not wrong.

Can someone explain the supposed upside here? Because I don't see one.
