An international wheelchair tennis event has been forced to move because the show court at a new $16m tennis complex has been built on a slope. The Darwin International Tennis Centre is set to stage the Arafura Games later this month, but wheelchair competitors have been relegated to one of its 14 outside courts.

The new centre, in the suburb of Marrara, was completed in May 2018 at a total cost of $16.7m, more than $16m of which was pledged by the Northern Territory government, with additional funding coming from Tennis Australia and Tennis NT.

quote:

Construction took a year, but it was not long before a major problem became apparent: the centre court had a 49.5cm slope from one side to the other. An incline of that size contravenes International Tennis Federation guidelines, meaning no officially-sanctioned events can be played until the slope is levelled.

Wonder if they will still hold the asphalt skiing events?

How the hell did they not notice a 1.6 foot slope from one side of a tennis court to the other?

Why stop the escalator? Dumbass. At that point I'm sure it was easier to let them go up.

So this is a non-story other than the coincidence that the wheelchair perps have a tourney going on, cause the issue is a an issue for peeps with working legs too

The fold and go electric wheelchair ad that popped up at the end of this thread was great.

Well thats just retarded. That will be a real handicap to the tennis community as a whole. Such a special event just ruined by an autistic mistake in planning.

19.5" in freedom units. How does one screw up that badly that over 27 feet you have a 19.5" drop? That's like a 3.5degree grade.
