My problem with common core is that it shouldn't matter how a student comes up with the solution if the answer is correct. If a kid wants to do it the old fashion way, or use this common core then so be it. I would even argue that being able to do it using different techniques would make a person even better at it.
I'm pretty open to this approach for core math the only thing I would stress would be the banning of calculators until a student achieves a learning level where they are ready to take on calculus.
You need to learn to do it in your head and focus on problem solving so that when you are faced with a real crisis in business or life you simply act or react with the correct solution which is the point of the exercise.

I'm all for states rights, and smaller government. I don't know how the common core math works, but it's amazing that people are so closed minded about new ways of learning. If everything stays stagnant, there is no progress. Better ways of learning should be desired, not shunned. Especially here in LA, where the education is so terrible.
This guy writing a common core problem is the stupidest shite I have seen all day. Would the bank take it if it were a traditional math equation? What a dumbass. I understand he is frustrated because he can't help his child with their homework, but his response immature.

And here you have another attention seeking whore. Of course he may have said that from the get go when he posted it his friends on FB -and the social media tards stretched it and ran with it.

Parents hate common core math because they don't understand it and can't help their children with homework like they can with other subjects. If a parent doesn't understand enough to help their children, the children are doomed because schools sure aren't getting it done during school hours.

Why does his cursive writing lean to the left?

WTF is wrong with the way we've been doing math since we figured out what math was?
Was this designed to bring the bottom up or bring the top down (like everything else they've done to education in the last 40 years.)

It was rough in the beginning to make my son get the common core. He struggled with math in 1st and 2nd grade... now he makes A's in math
Just dont get me started about the Social Studies and Sciences though

Why should a simple check take 4 math problems?
It shouldn't. There's no need for the implementation of common core in math at levels where only simple arithmetic is being used. It's very inefficient.
And why are we teaching kids the alphabet? I don't recite it when I read sentences.

I'm not saying that I support common core, I don't know enough about it to know what it is. I've seen the FB post with the simple math problem. But to dismiss an idea, just because it looks different (and it does look strange to me) is crazy. Just because we learned one way, doesn't mean there isn't a better way. If they are teaching this in conjunction with traditional ways of learning, it can only help in the students understanding of math. I can't say this is better, I'm saying that it's worth a look. It shouldn't be dismissed just because it's different.
I am pretty much against Federal involvement in most everything, education included. I believe the states need to be doing everything possible to push education and further learning on their own, they shouldn't give the feds a reason to try and push their own agenda. It seems that everyone is jumping at the opportunity to bash and trash this method of teaching. Is common core the answer? Hell if I know, but I think people should keep an open mind.

Not really the same. That's like saying why are we teaching counting, you don't count when you do math problems.

Forget about "Common Core". That brings in lots of other issues. It's about Eureka math. Common Core does not have to use Eureka math.

people are dumnb. News Flash - very few of you have any noteworthy skill at math and your children will all be better at recognizing patterns and general problem solving than you are (isn't that a good thing?). They will also be better equipped to take on upper level courses in college or to succeed in a math heavy major.

What's the beef with Eurika math? I'm honestly asking. I haven't found much on why it's so hated. I've seen people complaining that you create 4 problems to solve 1 and that they don't understand it. I've seen people say that it makes sense, because it reflects how people think and how the mind works.
I don't know what to make of it. I just think the blind hate is probably over the top. So, in your opinion, why is it so bad?

Or... maybe the entire point is to teach kids how math works, not just how to add two fricking numbers together.
But that's the problem. How math works is actually....hard. There are entire college level courses devoted to number and set theory. And only math majors take them, because only math majors can understand them.
Young children are way better at memorization than complete comprehension, which is why it's better to teach them HOW to do than to teach them WHY to do.
