shite can happen very fast in the water
I was caught in a rip current in PCB, people do not understand how disorienting and exhausting it is. Much of the advice about escaping a rip current doesn’t even apply if you’re in a real one.

Sucks for the guy and his family. I don’t understand how this happens. Why would you not back into safe water or the beach?

Hell, my wife and I were in Costa Rica a few years ago on vacation in a big surf village. Hung by the beach for a few days. One day I had a few drinks at lunch and went out to body surf some waves that afternoon. My wife is on the shore reading a book. Got a little ambitious. Went out further then I should have. Next thing the rip current is pulling me out and waves are pounding me every 15 seconds. I come up for air. Catch a breath. Boom another wave. This happens for a good 5 minutes or so and I start thinking shite, I'm way further out and way further to the right of where I started than I should be. I'm like 2-3 minutes from really panicking and starting to yell. Luckily I caught a wave that gets me about halfway closer to shore where I can touch. Slowly waded back in before getting to the beach and collapsing. My wife was like how was it out there. Looked like you were having fun. I'm thinking you have no idea how bad that was about to get.
I had just finished an Ironman that summer and know how to swim.
The ocean is nothing to mess with.

I don't know why, but this situation with a seagull reminded me of this song.
Seagulls (Stop it now)
Seagulls (Stop it now)

Every single person on the planet has likely done things that seemed completely benign and had they accidentally died while doing it people would have said afterwards "omg wtf were they thinking"
Not every single accident is the fault of the person involved. Life is random and chaotic.

How long do we give her to mourn? Did he have life insurance? If so she might be coming into some money
