It drives me crazy. People pay hundreds of dollars to be at events and spend the whole time worried about recording it. A shitty video they will probably never watch.
Louis CK has a great bit on this exact topic. He pretty much says the same thing. All these parents are blocking his view of his girl's play or whatever raising up their phones and tablets to record something they'll never watch.

Andy Schleck, a real contender, had to quit due to a knee injury. He was in a crash in London that started with a dumbass out in the road taking photos.

At least the dumbass got nailed. He was last seen laying on the curb.

That's awesome. You can see his teammate right behind him so he was probably protecting that guy and clearing the way. I like a team will all ride for one guy and protect him as much as they can.

I went to my local city fireworks on the 4th and I couldn't believe the amount of people videoing a fireworks show. Do they actually think they will ever watch that again? They were missing the actual show to video it.

There were idiots standing out in the middle of the road taking selfies as the peleton going 30 miles an hour was barelling down on them.

The lack of any self-awareness or regard for what is happening around them of many people blows my mind.

Pretty much what it sounds like...

I don't know if you have this issue, but every time I go to Disney/Universal (in the winter/fall mainly.) A lot of people like to walk against flow straight into people or take up the entire sidewalk so you can't get through going the opposite way. I can't count the number of times someone has just tried to walk over me or my wife.

So me and my bro in law just started playing a game where we shoulder check these people into things or each other if we can.

I understand it's tight quarters in there a lot and I try to give way to people that do the same, but we get fed up with some people who don't give way.

Dumbass got what he deserved. However I did see two riders on Sunday reach out to swat at fans that were not blocking their path. Primadonna cyclists. TDF fans have always been allowed to get close. Too close sometimes. Look at video of previous stages to Mt Ventoux. Cyclists just have to adjust but the selfie phenomenon is making it nearly impossible. Tour organizers will never erect barricades on the open road sections except in towns and finishes.

There's a different etiquette in flat stages versus in the mountains. In the mountains, guys are going 10MPH versus 30 and its much less dangerous to get close to the riders. Even then, there have been problems with fans pushing riders or impeding them like in the Giro this year. It seems to be getting worse.

Ya, my strategy for pictures and video is thus:

Video: I may attempt to take some, but never with my eye when using a phone, if it comes out OK, great. The only time I focus for video is when I'm visiting a site and want the sense of scope a video can give you.

Pictures: I take all my pictures on vacation at the beginning of visiting whatever it is. Take the shots I want, take them in rapid burst, then put my camera down and enjoy.

There are ways to do this instead of staring at a phone/camera the whole time.

I saw a dad with family at six flags years ago. Dad had his shoulder cam recording a fake arse old west shootout skit put on by college kids. He did not miss a second.

Now when in hell is anyone going to say, "You know what we should watch? That fake arse old west shootout skit put on by college kids we saw at six flags!"
