The main pipeline carrying gasoline and diesel fuel to the U.S. East Coast was shut down by its operator after being hit with a cyberattack.

Colonial Pipeline Co. operates the 5,500-mile Colonial Pipeline system taking fuel from the refineries of the Gulf Coast to the New York metro area. It said it learned Friday that it was the victim of the attack and "took certain systems offline to contain the threat, which has temporarily halted all pipeline operations."

The outage isn't expected to have a significant impact on fuel markets unless the pipeline remains shut down for several days, analysts said.

Fox Business

Maybe it won’t have a significant impact on fuel markets, but any excuse to raise prices at the pump will be utilized.

Agree.

Even a 1 day shutdown is a problem

There are already people believing there is a "gas shortage". I got a call the other day from a family member telling me to go fill up my vehicles and any gas cans I have. I know he and his entire immediate family all went and did it. That equals about 11 vehicles and various pieces of lawn and other equipment. I asked if he was familiar with the idea of a "Self-fulfilling Prophecy", he wasn't.

When my company got hit with a cyber attack almost all of our systems were taken down for a solid 2-3 weeks. I’m in the northeast. I’m going to fill my cars and can today.

It probably wasn’t meant to take anything down. That was the test run

Ours jumped from $2.99 to $3.24. Of course on January 19th it was under $2. Thank a bunch you stuttering old frick who's occupying the White House.

The gas line is supposed to be restarted today...at least that’s what I was told yesterday afternoon when Colonial shutdown in the middle of pumping gasoline from us.

Interesting nugget that the NY metro needs something from the deep south

Pricing is different in the New York Harbor...and a good portion of your commodities traders/blenders are in NYC...so they buy and blend on the Gulf and ship it to the east coast via colonial or to the Midwest via explorer pipeline.

Blows my mind how systems like this are connected to the internet and accessible to hackers

That's definitely going to cause the price of crawfish to go up.

The amount of automation and sophisticated monitoring systems that a line like colonial has or any major interstate pipeline...I’m surprised this is the first public acknowledgment of a compromise.

Well think about it. These systems are operated through vast distances and are controlled from a single or several central locations. Transmission of data via PLC and DCS systems require a system like the internet. Unless you have your own hard wire (which no one does), you have to use the internet and have super tight controls and firewalls.

All it takes is some jack hole getting a phishing email on the computer to unlock access to the company systems.

Colonial is about to get hammered for its outdated systems but yes, it should not be this easy. Most pipelines and refineries are on closed systems and it takes an act of god to hook up anything new on site that requires local access.

I can't believe there are people to this day that are so stupid that they think the president is somehow controlling gas prices.

Seems like if you run a pipeline wouldnt cost much more to run wire along it

Yeah but then you gotta feed and nurture the hamsters running the wheel to power the network systems. That’s where cost benefit fails

I’d guess that someone opened an email from an external source thinking it was legit.
